Re: I Cannot Rest
I meant that many of our, em, discussions, in the past over the films I was coming from the point of view of an argument which depended quite strongly for its supporting evidence on what PJ choose to put into and remove from the theatrical versions v the EE's.
But as you had not seen the EE's that part of my argument would not have been particulalry evident to you.
It wasnt an insult (this time! ) just a realisation that made me look back on some of our previous, discussion, in a new light.

But if you still havent seen some of the scenes I have talked about or used as evidence in a debate, you cant really know if it would have affected your opinion or not surely?

Re: I Cannot Rest
Im not sure about the actual tune, but theres not a listing as such that I can see ? But what I do see inside on the cd sleeve is a quote from Howard Shore,..."I could not have approached a work of this scope without great collaborators. Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh have led me on this journey thru middle earth. They lit the dark corners of Tolkiens world & revealed to me its secrets & mythology.Whether in the bright sunlight & snow of Caradhras,or the pitch black of Moria.I was able to follow their path."
This statement makes it sound like PJ & crew are proficient in their knowledge ?

Norc wrote:i like the fact that we don't know oh, and also, I didn't know men and elves spoke fluent dwarvish, isn't that a secret language only spoken by dwarves?
Not to ruin anything for you, but it does actually have a translation according to one of the people in charge of translating the movie for foreign release. Courtesy of Elvish.org:
Neo-Khuzdul: "Ishkhaqwi ai durugnul"
English: "I spit upon your grave"
The phrase is in the "reconstructed" Dwarvish language of Khuzdul. Tolkien wrote very little about Khuzdul, presumably because it was supposed to be a secret language. The word "ai", meaning upon, is used by Tolkien, for instance, in the Dwarven battle cry "Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!" meaning "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!" None of the other words in the quote are genuine Tolkienian Khuzdul, though. They were invented by the linguistic consultant(s) for the movie, as were several other words and phrases through the trilogy.

It's not on the initial soundtrack album, but the track was included on the "Complete Recordings" of FOTR released in 2005. There was a Complete Recordings album released for each of the films which included a lot of additional music and was nearly three times as long.

Re: I Cannot Rest
I'm not sure if this counts since it's about the movies, but I may as well share the benefits of my misspent youth learning way more about The Lord of the Rings than was probably healthy. Plus I still love it, books, movies, and all.
Re: I Cannot Rest
wasnt "I spit on your grave" a film ! ?

Re: I Cannot Rest
Glad I could help out! According to Google it was a movie, but I suspect the LOTR writers just meant the phrase as a more generic insult. A bit outdated, but the meaning is clear (or would be if we all spoke Khuzdul ).

Each of the Complete Recordings has multiple CDs (for a total of about 10 for the entire trilogy). If all three CDs are from FOTR, then it's the Complete Recordings. If it's one CD for each film, then it's the original soundtracks. Not that there's anything wrong with the original soundtracks, they're also great.
EDIT: You can see all the track listings on Wikipedia.
Re: I Cannot Rest
I think that I have seen the exact same scenes as you, regarding the scenes we 'debated Petty. We were 'debating the same scene not an out of context one. However my opinions would not have changed. Not having seen the EEs doen not invalidate my opinions. Nor can it be used as a justification for discounting my views on the grounds of ignorance of the whole picture, as you seem to be suggesting.
I definately didnt get the super dooper cd then. I have 3 cds but I dont have the Passing of the Elves. i also wish I had Arwens Song, the one that Liv sung in the House of healing.

I never made any such suggestion- what I am saying is that MY arguments are backed by the idea that a comparison between the theatrical and EE's reveals a truth about PJ's choices and what he thinks important in a film.
If you have not seen the EE's then this particular argument, of mine, which has formed the backbone of other discussions (on my side) you cannot have fully have got what I was saying if you have never seen them.
It does not invalidate anything and I never said it did- I said it put things in a new light as we have been debating over different versions of the films. To me the EE's are significiantly different films.

Re: I Cannot Rest
I don't think anyone is doubting your ability to understand what Petty said, Mrs Figg. The EEs add a good three hours of material though, so the two of you had different contexts for the discussion. That inevitably makes it more difficult to mutually communicate. It's no one's fault and it doesn't make anyone better, of course.
Re: I Cannot Rest
It kind of presupposes that my arguments are invalid though. As I havent seen all the EEs. It presupposes that Petty has the full picture and I do not. That he is justifying my opinions of the films by saying I dont have the full picture. Which I strongly refute. Whether I see the EEs or not it doesnt change MY opinions one iota, and if it IS more difficult to communicate as a result of this in your minds, then when I make a comment about LOTR or PJ maybe its better if Petty doesnt 'debate' with me, or try to engage with my reasoning. I wouldnt want any crosswires would I.

the two of you had different contexts for the discussion.- Eldo
That is precisely it Eldo. It does not invalidate anything anyone has said but it casts new light on the context.
Mrs Figg no neeed to go running for the deep end to jump off- all I said was realising that you hadnt seen the EE's made me see your perspective on things in a slightly different light- it does not change one word or alter one bit of the validity of your opinions- it just gives context to them.
I didnt realise this was Norcing- I thought this was just, you know, women....
