Re: The Positive Thread
Haha. I remember seeing this thing on tv where they gave 20 movie employees stale popcorn while watching a movie at the cinema, which they all raved about. Later they gave them fresh real butter popcorn away from the movie situation, and they described it as boring, uninteresting, tasteless and ...yes... stale.
So I do have some misgivings about how good popcorn supposedly is.

Peter Jackson would be a good casting for Bill Ferny.

Well, that's at least somewhat positive. I'll grant you that.

I'm reading the book now. I'll "cast" him when his part comes up

Yeah, I'm guessing his parts are some of the first out of your purist edit Petty.
I might go and download download that now actually.

Re: The Positive Thread
Haha, a little too subtle perhaps.
I just seemed to remember that a couple of people said not to watch your edit before one had seen the film.
(Checking back it was only Ringo I think.)
And I didn't really have the time or energy to say much about it last night, so thought I'd just drop a subtle hint.

Yeah, and that was kind of my point.
Having seen it yesterday, I can now see your edit with a clear conscience.
I might have been too subtle again though.

On a serious note, an obvious (and extremely ironic) positive (or negative depending on your point of view) is that we have the film's to thank for this forum's existence, I can't speak for anyone else, but I wouldn't have started posting to Bree/TORn and by extension, here, if it weren't for my curiosity about the film's.

That's certainly very true. I was only marginally aware of The Hobbit films when I first became active in Tolkien fandom (they were still in the very early stages of pre-production), but I wouldn't have ventured away from the older forums where I started off if it wasn't for the films. Not that this forum would have existed for me to find, anyway. I remember saying years ago, when it was unclear if The Hobbit movies would happen at all, that even if they were never made, I'd be glad to have the forum and the community of people I met there. I think that's just as true of disappointing films as non-existent ones.
Re: The Positive Thread
I agree. That's one good thing that's come out of these movies. Its awfulness has unified most of the fandom You guys are pretty cool too

Re: The Positive Thread
Definitely. It's the end of an era (though some will say it's more the end of an error (I'm so clever)). But yeah, no more Middle-earth movies to look forward to will be a big change, especially for those of us to young to remember what it was like before the LOTR films were underway.
Re: The Positive Thread
Yeah, I'll definitely be glad that PJ won't be able to fuck anything up anymore. But kind of sad about it too. Too many emotions!

Re: The Positive Thread
It'll be a little bitter sweet, but who knows what the future will hold? I'll always have the books and WB will retain the rights for the foreseeable future. I'm not entirely convinced they won't shell out another movie or show without Jackson at the helm. I wonder how the rest of the fanbase at large would react to such a thing: A Middle Eaarth Movie without PJ. I'd be more alarmed by the idea of a "Middle Earth movie" with seemingly no plot or place in the canon whatsoever a la Shadows of Mordor.
But this is all blind speculation. I've got LotR, GOT and now I've got the Witcher saga to jump into as well which I can so far recommend as far as the books are concerned.

Re: The Positive Thread
Well, we've still got the 'big box set' of the two trilogies, and the upcoming Biopics to be annoyed by, so I think we'll hav enough to be crabbit about for the foreseeable future.
But, as Eldo says (and as I was saying in another thread) it's goging to be pretty weird seeing how Tolkien/the franchise is perceived without Jackson at the Helm.
