COWBOYS 24, GIANTS 17

I'm actually a little surprised that we managed to pull this one out. Also, this is the first time that the defending Super Bowl champions have been defeated in the season opener since 2004 when the current opener system began. Very Happy

Go Cowboys! cheers

Good result for the Cowboys Eldo but some terrible defending surely in that one you posted- thats not just wide open- he has so much time and space out there he could have pulled up a chair and stopped for a cuppa.

Yeah, to be honest it was a fairly terrible game all around. I'm happy the Cowboys won but they made a lot of mistakes, especially penalties (13 or 14 throughout the game). They were lucky that they were able to deliver in clutch situations and that the Giants also made a number of mistakes.

Not sure if this belongs here or on the news threads but I felt it should get a mention.
The truth about Hillsborough has finally come out- shocking yes but hardly suprising sadly.
I watched that game live and the tragedy that ensued before the cameras, well a part of me has been haunted by it ever since.
For those who might not know in 1989 a semifinal match was being held at Hillsborough, there was mismanagment at all levels of the crowd and the result was a horrific crush in which 96 people, including children, were crushed to death. And all unfolding live in front of a horrified nation.

In the aftermath the police, inquiries and government placed the blame sqaurely on the deceased and the rest of the fans, claiming drunkness, holiganism was the main cause

'The report published on Wednesday by the Hillsborough Independent Panel found police amended 164 of the statements made about the tragedy. Of those, 116 were substantially changed to "remove or alter comments unfavourable" to the force. The report also found that 41 of the 96 who died had the "potential to survive" and calls have been made for fresh inquests.'
Now I dont believe for a second that 116 of the 190 officers on duty that day all took it into their heads to 'amend' their reports to make the force look good and to put the blame n the crowd itself- that came from above- the question them becomes how far above?
This was a tricky political period in which the Thatcher government was turning the police force into the hated strong arm of government it has become to use against the miners- a scandal blaming the police would have been very uncomfortable.

The Sun newspaper which at the time ran with headlines blaming the fans and writing stories about the victims blaming them, today issued a full apology in their editorial-

'In a desperate attempt to hide their own failings, South Yorkshire (Police) created a smokescreen of lies.
Senior officers tried to smear the innocent by fabricating lurid allegations about Liverpool fans- and then feeding them to the media.
It is to the eternal discredit of this newspaper that we reported as fact misinformation which tarnished the reputation of Liverpool fans including the 96 victims.
Today we unreservedly apologise for that misjudgement.
A newspaper that prides itself on serving ordinary working people betrayed that trust 23 years ago.
And for that we are profoundly sorry.'- The Sun

I doubt it will increase their sales in Liverpool any.

I first heard about Hillsborough a couple of years ago and it's truly horrible. It's shameful that it took this long, but I hope the report and the official apologies may at least give some peace of mind to the families and survivors, even though it can't bring anyone back.

Well the NFL season is into its third week. The league decided to lockout the regular referees and hire incompetents! Now all we have is chaos! The outcome of several games has been decided by several bad calls, the latest and most talked about is the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.

I haven't watched a ton of games in the first three weeks but the ones I have seen have been in increasing disgust. After the Packers-Seahawks game, I'm not much interested in watching any more until the real refs are back. I can't take the game seriously anymore. There's always luck involved in football, but games shouldn't come down to who the refs fucked over more. The replacement refs are also terrible at controlling the game. Violent and illegal behavior has increased to a ludicrous amount, the refs regularly give out first downs and time outs that teams don't have a right to, and just hold up the game. With the Packers-Seahawks game, the refs and teams actually left the field and the post-game press conferences started before the refs remembered that they had to kick an extra point and dragged everyone back out. Rolling Eyes

The hometown crowd in Baltimore had a few choice words (well, just one, really) for the replacement refs on Sunday night. Very Happy

I should note that this sort of thing really doesn't happen all that much in Baltimore. The crowd is usually quite well behaved, even if they're always loud.

Also, I love this GIF of the refs nodding to each other and then giving totally different calls. Laughing
