Bowie has retired- that's why he wasn't there! He hasn't toured, as far as I'm aware since 04/05. Apparently the winner of that race BTW, Vinokourov (thanks google) is a confirmed drug cheat, testing positive in 2007 making his victory even more sour in my eyes. Um, anyway, there was more than enough Bowie in the opening ceremony (like 4 songs inc underpressure) and the Team GB squad coming out to heroes was a nice touch.

But I can't think of someone, still touring regularly, who is also an icon of British music for over 50 years known all over the world, who would have done a better job than McCartney. It was supposed to be a montage of Best of Britain, and with music, McCartney is up there with the very best Wink

They could have stuck Take That up there for all I cared... just not god damn McCartney.

If you are talking British icons... Elton John? He is a far better musician IMO (I dont like his music though). Sure Sir Cliff would have done it. Shirley Bassey.

I would have honestly have prefered Zig and Zag over that Scally (which I think I'm allowed to say being a Liverpool FC supporter and my dad having been born in the Royal Liverpool hospital).

Macca is definately part of music legend that I wont deny, but his recent persona turns me off, it is a bit shady all that Heather Mills/Stella stuff. like she would ever have been a stylst without him. I loved the Beatles music, but I dont like him as a person. he is too much of a holy icon for my liking, I prefer someone a bit more humble and with a sense of humour. I would have liked someone with powerful magnetism on that stage, not him croaking hey jude. but the Beatles were the best ever.

Pulp singing Common People would have been my choice- couldnt find a better song to fit the opening theme.

McCartney wrote Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday, And I Love Her, For No One, Blackbird, I Saw Her Standing There, Can't Buy Me Love, Helter Skelter, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Back in the U.S.S.R., Get Back, Paperback Writer, Got to Get You Into My Life, Here There and Everywhere, She's Leaving Home, playing on nearly all of them.

Elton John is enjoyable (to an extent) but I find him pretty boring after awhile. Pretty melodies but nothing particularly interesting, musically speaking for the majority of his output when he reached fame. Which is shame, as Tumbleweed Connection is a great album Wink Plus his live concerts just seem to be him on piano, where McCartney plays guitar, bass, and piano and seems much more of an entertainer. Plus Crocodile Rock, Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me- his big songs- I've never really liked.

As for McCartney's personality- it all depends on how you interpret it. I've always read him as very humble & privileged that he received the fame The Beatles obtained. He's an active charity campaigner & vegetarian. Admittedly he doesn't have that humorous streak that Lennon had- but he has done charity skits for good causes before. McCartney & Hey Jude was the perfect closing song IMO Razz

I like Macca always have had- but he is not the performer he once was. But he is a living legend and there are not that many of them around.

Zig and Zag- Lance

Dont knock Zig and Zag- besides Denise Van Outens cleavage they were the best thing ever on the Big Breakfast!

David seems to hang about a great deal here in Canada since his model wife Imam, i never get her name correct, has a clothing line and they attend functions and the catwalk frequently. It does seem wierd to see him tagging along after his wife, but on the other hand his eyes don't have that tortured emotionally ill look they had for years . He laughs and it is real now. So kudos to his beautiful wife.
I always thought when Linda died, the real Paul died with her. Still makes me cry.

I agree about Linda, LeeLee, after she died he starting looking a bit weird, and his judgement seemed to fail him. I kinda liked the old Bowie, the one in The man who fell to Earth, with his snaggly teeth, that was his biggest mistake, getting his teeth Hollywoodized.

There were lots of tweets etc about it saying that they shouldnt be kicked out because they were being clever. That just sums some people up really... win at all costs even if it means you dont have to play the other good teams to get there.

Glad they got made an example of. One of the Chinese players quit afterwards. Think the head coach should be sacked!!

There's no doubt they will pay. I'm sure the players were all following their coaches' instructions to the letter. Chinese athletes are trained with military discipline. Because of Chinese culture and the extreme loss of face, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some people die over this. Mad
