I have never read the books but I have seen the tv series. I thoroughly enjoyed it, its quirky and eccentric, just don't expect a realisitic cop drama, but it gets at the realism through exaggeration and is a lot of fun, engaging characters, a lot of humour and a good dose of pathos too. However thats taking it as tv- I have no idea if its very or not at all authentic to the books.

Pettytyrant101 wrote:Being watching 'Young James Herriot' on the BBC- a three part drama partly made up and partly based on early notes and unpublished works. For those not familar with James Herriot his books are about his life and chart his time from leaving Glasgow Vetinerary College and getting his first job as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales, through WW2, his marriage and many [ymore years. I highly recommend them.
I used to watch the tv series based on them, All Creatures Great and Small but was always annoyed he was English in it. This drama corrects that as it covers his time at Glasgow Vetinary College. Its a little to retrojected modern in its ideas, I doubt the female charater who he was really at college with was quite so modern in her views or so forceful in them, although I've no doubt she was of that opinion there is something unauthentic with the period in how she expresses them. But that aside I've thouroughly enjoyed it and the other period detail is as sumptious as only the BBC can make it.

Haven't been able to catch much telly recently, though I did enjoy the lovely Brian Cox's show on Quantum Physics the other day (same time as the Young James Herriot on bbc2). Obviously I think Brian Cox is amazing and got a little distracted with his nerdy hotness, but the physics was intresteting too. It was basically a few experiments and a basic lecture by Mr Cox with the help of a few celebs, with a ton more watching on. With him as my teacher I'd of proably carried on with AS physics Cool Don't know if anyone's seen his Wonders of the Solar System either, but that was also great. He truly is the rockstar of physics, answering the big questions with his boyish charm... Razz

Just watched the first of the three new Sherlocks. Can't begin to say how good it was, and you know me for pickiness with my Shelrock Holmes stuff. Guy Ritchie take note this is how you take an older character and update them in the modern world without loosing either the characters or what they are about.
Possibly the best 90minutes of TV I will watch in 2012 and its only Jan 02.
Cant recommend it enough-see it anyway you can.

That does look very good! Very Happy Especially in comparison to the immensely disappointing Guy Ritchie sequel that just came out. I've been meaning to take a look at Sherlock but it's moved up the list of priorities quite a bit now!

It was so good I watched it again- and it only got better if possible on a second viewing. Can't wait for the next one and their take on the Hound of the Baskervilles. Of all the ones to transpose to the modern day I think its the hardest.

Thanks for the link, Petty! I just watched the first episode and it was absolutely brilliant. I watched the first episode of the Jeremy Brett show and I enjoyed that, but this one was a work of genius. Both leads were great, though I have to say that Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson was my favorite. I'm looking even more forward to seeing him in The Hobbit now. I hope to be able to hunt down the other episodes for Sherlock soon! Very Happy Very Happy

Its written by Stephen Moffat- a name you should know Eldo as I bang on about him enough as he is the current Head Writer of Doctor Who- now can you see why you have to the give the Doctor a proper go?! He's a writing genius.

Yes, I've heard no end of praise for Steven Moffat on this forum. Razz And I did try watching the first episode of series five for Dr Who and enjoyed it, but it didn't blow me away. I may give it another try in the future, but I'm just not sure it's quite my style. That said, if the first episode of Sherlock is any indication, than Moffat is just as good as you say he is. Cool

Likes most long running tv shows best to watch a few in a row to get the vibe of the thing and settle in. (Or watch book1!)

Loved Sherlock, this opener was brill. Such a shame it is only three episodes again, but then if I want to see hobbits and who I guess it is a sacrifice I have to make!

(And did you see the anagram trailer - fun!)

Like Ally the only bit that didn't sit right with me was that ending.
Its an odd one to judge from a purist perspective. The first half was Scandal in Bohemia (think that was the name of the original- something like that) and hit all the story points,
Spoiler:
what follows is more a sort of sequal which Moffat has made up, but the two fit so seemlessly together to make a whole I found nothing to criticize save the last minute.

I found the first series of Sherlock on Amazon Instant Video for only $9 (less than the cost of a movie ticket) so I went ahead and bought it. Now I can watch clear-resolution copies of the first three episodes without any ads or subtitles. Very Happy I already watched the second episode and while I enjoyed it, I didn't find it as good as the first. I have high hopes for the third episode as well as series two, and I hope to rewatch the very first episode on an actual TV since Amazon lets you do that if you have an internet connection for your TV. Very Happy

The second episode was definently the poorest of the original three- I saw one news paper review of the latest episode which started by saying "After the superb opening of the first series, with two superb episodes and the other one', you just watched the 'other one'!
Whilst the first ones were good I thought this latest one was better in almost every way, more confident, everyone more relaxed in their role and even better looking- although Freeman still does his expressions to camera thing -seems he always will so I expect he will do it in TH too.
