I just KNEW it.  The moment Legolas jumped up in the Council of Elrond and proclaimed with flashing eyes "you owe him your allegiance!" I could tell that was a young lover's loyalty.

Most worrying of all, however, is the news that the new series isn’t going to be based on anything JRR Tolkien wrote. It will be a prequel that ditches the canon in order to explore the events between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, events so dull that Tolkien didn’t bother committing them to paper. Even if Amazon manages to claw a meaningful story out of this deliberate lull, there’s no guarantee it will be good. Game of Thrones went horrendously off the rails as soon as it let go of the books. And don’t forget the wholly unnecessary third Hobbit film, which stretched three pages of a novel into a two-and-a-half hour movie. Watching it felt like having someone batter the IQ out of you with a tray.

I feel odd...all these years I felt WB and the Saul Zanetz Company were cashing in the license by doing all these videogame spinoffs and stretching the Hobbit into three films, the Tolkien Estate held the moral high ground protecting the rights...and now with Christopher Tolkien out of the picture they quickly license the TV rights and open up the world to endless commercialisation and expansion.

I think Tolkien would be impressed and humbled that all these years later his writing has inspired such a large media empire and interest, but I think he'd be rather horrified by a company like Amazon tampering with his universe.

Intra-Amazon product placement aside -- #synergy -- this is more evidence for the theory that the spin-off series will be about Young Aragorn. I outlined my reasons for why I think this is likely on the previous page but it's always nice to see more clues. Some people on TORn seem to think this means there will be a Tom Bombadil series but I find that highly unlikely. Aragorn's resistance to the Ring has been pretty thoroughly discussed (including by the film-makers during their explanations of why they changed things with Faramir) and it's at the heart of one his most memorable lines from FOTR:

It again screws over all Aragorns character moments- instead of it being total confusion and him not knowing where the hell Frodo is or what is happening and then feeling guilty at having lost control of the situation later we get cheap cheese and no consequences (even more infurating later in the Gandalf/Aragorn scene Gandalf tells him not 'regret his decisions' even though he has nothing to regret in the film and personally sent Frodo on his way with his blessing!!!!! Pure rubbish that they did not in the slightest think through, again!    

My crabbit meter is twitching something awful at all this news, and the more we hear the more twitchy its getting. Young Aragorn? Come off it that's a terrible idea, no not strong enough, its a fucking shit idea.  
If they really feel they have to tell something from the past tell something interesting- ME history is full of amazing important events, young Aragorn simply is not one of them. The only way to make it interesting would be to contrive a hell of a lot of made up drama and events to pad it out into something. And we have already seen how well it goes when modern filmmakers decide to pad out Tolkien with 'extra drama' we get shite, pure and utter pointless runny shite!    No! No! No!    }}}}

Between the tweets and pre-FotR and the simple logic of giving the unwashed public some point of familiarity, I think this matter is pretty well settled. We're getting Young Aragorn. Trotter.
