Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
It's hard on the hands, honestly, getting something of this size erect. But when you're actually in the midst of it, gripping your tool and hammering away like a piston, it's hard to beat the pure physical satisfaction.

It's fitting that you managed to top all the previous comments by far, Forrest.

Good on you Forest. My father has done several similar things at our cabin. Luckily we don't have termites.

Guys guys, as Forest legal representative, I must insist we not inadvertently besmirch Forest good name or reputation. I am sure his conscience is as clean as the whitest snow.

Who said anything besmirching? It's all been complementary that I can see.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
It's all implied, m'lud', something the young people nowadays refer to as slang, or colloquialism.
Now there is absolutely nothing shameful in a young lad "gripping his tool and hammering away like a piston", as they say. All completely normal activity.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Just had a delicate thought. Are you putting in a, uh...water closet? Not totally needed with the great outdoors, except maybe your great outdoors tends to fill up with snow.

Definitely vertical anyway!
I have plans for a shower, sink, and toilet in the downstairs. I was considering a composting toilet, but there isn't space underneath so that it would have to be one that uses a small amount of water. Water is not your friend when it comes to composting toilets, so I might just run a line down to the septic tank. I don't know. I'll deal with it later!

They are a pestilence! Anyway, do you go camping at this cabin? Is it off in some secluded wilderness spot or something?Bluebottle wrote:Good on you Forest. My father has done several similar things at our cabin. Luckily we don't have termites.

I believe the young people call it amorous congress, m'lud', no mere celestial convergence.

Often, yes, but it is more like a house. It is in a forest on a hill by a lake, not wilderness per se, but def nature.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Ah, so with the plumbing it will be a true abode, not just a writer's shed or the like.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Indeed!
I've been side-tracked by a time-intensive job on the cabin. I wanted to add some scandinavian flavour, so I've been carving a kind of sea-dragon or something into the fascia.
An early close-up:
(Don't mind the goods drying in the background!)
Almost done here:
It's based on the eaves on the Hove Church in Sogn og Fjordane County, Norway.

Damn, that looks awesome. Great stuff, Forest! Is that primer on the fascia or are you planning on leaving it white?

Just primer for now. I didn't want to screw it up in place until I had painted it, and I couldn't paint it until I picked out a colour theme for the entire building. I'm now thinking the dragon-y thing is going to be red on a green background. Sort of a brick red on olive green kind of thing. Kind of like this:Eldorion wrote:Damn, that looks awesome. I doubt the, aherm, pipeweed of yore was quite so... potent (or big-flowered!)Halfwise wrote: Wow! I like the dryingherbspipeweed in the background. Very medieval as well.
