I think there were plenty of songs sung, but this particular style is an American invention. The call and response supposedly comes from slave work songs.

I don't really know anything about sea shanties but I loved that. I love you

When you mentioned work songs this was the first thing that comes to mind for me:

It was recorded on Parchman Farm (the Mississippi State Penitentiary) in the 1950s by Alan Lomax; a group of prisoners were singing while chopping wood in time. Only one of their names was recorded, but when the song was used in the soundtrack of O Brother, Where Are Thou? they found the guy and gave him a royalty check from the soundtrack and flew him out to the Grammys where the soundtrack won Album of the Year.

I've got half a dozen shanties I can do well enough to lead from memory, and when necessary I've kept the same song going for more than an hour in call-and-response. It's amazing how they can make the exhaustion, pain (and sometimes terror) fade into the background when there's something you've really got to do NOW, like rowing hard against a current to stay off the rocks..... pale

Actually it's called a theremin.  I've never seen one used before with such precision.  That woman is a real talent.

Edit: I'd also read that Morricone was obsessed with the voice of a particular vocalist who he used many times.  I had no idea she was so young.

Re-edit: Morricone actually used Edda Dell'Orso; the girl in the clip is just one of those young brilliant imitators. I have a soft spot for young folks with outsized talent...hope she can use it and it doesn't crush her.

Very good. Nod Although as Bruce Springteen and Bob Dylans styles go, this is my favourite example. (Bob Dylans' very tounge in cheekly parodying Bruce' style.)

I first heard about Skinnyman a couple years ago but the other day I listened to his sole LP, Council Estate of Mind, all the way through for the first time. It's really good and remarkably consistent in terms of quality. The below song is one not one of the ones I'd heard before now; it's not necessarily my favorite off the album, but I really like it and was thinking that it would've fit well with the farewell thread playlist from back in January. Smile

In a bit of a Dylan mood lately, and when that happens it usually leads to the occasional Joan Baez clip on youtube. This one I hadn't heard before - one she wrote about Bob Dylan. They don't write love songs like this one anymore Shocked

"now you're telling me
you're not nostalgic
then give me another word for it
you who are so good with words
and at keeping things vague
because I need some of that vagueness now
it's all come back too clearly
"

She's not bad with words herself Smile

Huh, I clearly need to listen to more '60s folk, 'cause I didn't know "Diamonds and Rust" was a Joan Baez song. I only knew it from the Judas Priest cover. I really like the original too, though.
