Re: Music [3]
I was listening to Life of Pablo for the first time today, as I stumbled across a live recording Ultralight Beam somewhere. I have to admit there are about four songs I really like, but there is also a lot that doesn't come across as all that interesting, leaving the album very hit and miss to me.
Love Ultralight Beam, Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1, Famous and... some others though

I signed up for the free preview of Tidal and listened to TLOP two or three times right after it came out, though apparently Kanye released a slightly different remastered version a week or two later which I haven't heard.
Wasn't one of my favorite albums by him but it's hard to say since I don't remember that much from it. Although that in and of itself isn't a great sign.

Re: Music [3]
Yeah, it's very up and down. Like, I like 3-4 of the first four songs, but after that there's only a couple, and it's an 18 song album
Really love the first four though

Re: Music [3]
Funny, I've largely dissociated Bach from his choral work, even though it's the bulk of his output. I wonder if that's just my instrumental bias or if his instrumental works are rated higher because they are technically flashier?

Re: Music [3]
The soul side of American Black music is too often overlooked. I can tell you from experience, there is nothing, nothing like a gospel church service where the preacher is half singing the whole time and the piano never stops playing, interpreting the mood for like 2 hours straight.

Re: Music [3]
I've started to get into soul by way of hip hop thanks to producers like Kanye (moreso in the early part of his career) who use a lot of soul samples. It's fun discovering a whole new set of classic artists like Al Green and Sam Cooke as well as listening to more of guys like James Brown and Marvin Gaye who I previously knew only through their biggest crossover hits. Though actually I first heard the above song several years ago because it was prominently featured in an anime film and it stuck with me as the highlight of that particular movie.
It sounds pretty funky to me but I live the title of Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul...

Not a religious person myself, but I like this song (And yes, country used to be great, and probably still is today if you find the right artists )

Re: Music [3]
hm...given the rather throwback melody structure and feeling of that song I always imagined those guys as being at least 10 years older.

Kendrick Lamar interviewed by Rick Rubin for GQ ... I really liked the interview and it made me think of Blue.

Not heard that version of Walk on by before. I liked it. This is still my favourite.

I got into listening to Francis and the Lights' new album a day or two ago, and while I'm not a complete devout yet, a couple of songs really captured my eye.. err.. ear..
