In furtherance of the accent theory I was trying to work out where 7 (McCoy) might have got his accent from, as following the above theory he should have been American (Peri)- then I remembered this happened during the 6th Doctor period, and the shock of seeing Jamie again caused him to be Scottish next time out-

The Two Doctors Special- 6 meets 2.

so why did Eccky get his Northern accent from? maybe it was a chance encounter with a stroppy Mancunian bird?

8- one of his last companions was played by northern actress Sheridan Smith (Big Finish audio).  Nod

Maybe it works better when just contemplating the new series`?  Shrugging

That the pool of actors they selected early in the series was so uniformely from a theatre background did have a certain effect on how people spoke.

The whole accent question is interesting when one compares it to the actors original accent. Tom Baker for instance was from Liverpool, but spoke with a perfect RADA accent as the Doctor and in everyday life. I think they touch upon it here.

https://youtu.be/K9zWuklil8g?t=1m22s

And David Tennant was asked not to speak with a Scottish accent in the role, as opposed to both McCoy and Cipaldi.

Maybe they went with a Northern accent for 9 intentionally-makes him sound deeper and rougher around the edges in comparison to the other 8, almost like his voice matured with the Time War as well as his temperament.

I'm sorta hoping for a reference to Eccles

Clara 'If your'e an Alien from Gallifrey why do you sound like your from Scotland?'

The Doctor 'Lots of Planets have a Scotland'

Clara 'But-'

The Doctor cuts her off with that creepy stare...

Ah but my theory hold true still as the companions of early Doctors also weren't allowed to be too regional and all that BBC sound to them.

(Theres a wonderful Scottish version of this- there is a Scottish accent which only exists in one place- BBC Scotland news. As we Scots are crabbit, drunk and cantankerous, to keep the peace between east and west coast they speak in a away that's neither. And just to be on the safe side its not Highland or Islands either. The only place you can hear it is BBC Scotland news)

They should get a Geordie Doctor at some point. I've noticed there are very very few broad Irish or Welsh accents on the Beeb.

The latest bonkers but brilliant ideas I've heard for Doctor 12 are a Sonic-screwdriver Cane, and a pet gaint Basset Hound called Robbie.

True true. Nod  Still it's a more tantalizing idea later on.

Isn't that what they call a beautiful Morningside accent?  Laughing

No, no! Morningside is in Edinburgh- if BBC Scotland start talking like that you will cause a riot in Glasgow.  Mad

Well no, but such a riot sparked by the blatant favouring by the BBC of east over west would eventually bring, drunkenly and raging at the train prices, Glasgowians to Edinburgh to point out in person how crabbit they feel.

And maybe it's easier to come up with something that unites everyone in hate agianst it, than something everyone likes.  Shrugging

the Morningside accent almost sounded English.- Blue

In Glasgow they are the same thing  Very Happy (the belief seems to be that its an accent that came about from those trying to ingratiate themselves on the English- but as part of the Glasgow mental state Glasgow is also half a city worth of Union Jack waving Unionists, but they dont like people from Edinburgh either because its just the sort of place you get independence spouting liberal catholic sympathisers- its a complicated place Glasgow but the results the same- they dont like the east coast  Nod )

His parodies are hilarious though.  Very Happy

Whilst looking up the xmas viewing figures for Sherlock I came upon this in the Guardian-

"Viewing figures for most of the big shows were down compared with Christmas 2012, except for Doctor Who, which was significantly up"

So much for spurious claims of falling popularity as it was the only programme to buck the trend of falling viewers on the day.
