Re: Doctor Who [4]
Merry buckied xmas to one and all!
I dont usually review episodes until Ive watched them twice, but xmas internet speeds not much chance of that right now so I shall, drunkenly, and with a stomach that has seen at least one to many mince pies, attempt to review it.
This will be full of spoilers, and possibly, almost certainly, a bit rambly.
Bottoms up!

- Spoiler:
OK. This episode is called the snowmen- and there are indeed Snowmen in it- but to be honest you needn't worry much about them- the actual story of this episode is how the Doctor meets Clara and gets his curiousty back. The Snowman thing is just the threat to hang that on.
There is plus and downsides to this- the down side is that Richard E Grant is underused as the villian- even though he does give a wonerfully understated and, excuse the pun, rather chilling performance.
And Ian Mckellan, whose voice is a good match for the alien evil behind it all- the Great Intelligence (more on that later)- could do so much more in Who than a disembodied voice.
The basic plot is your usual malignant force wants to take over the world with an army of animated snowmen- or more precisely by replacing everyone with forms it can inhabit, ice versions of humans with crystals copies of DNA so it can evolve- and crucial to this plan is a dead governess, who drowned in a pond that then froze over with her body still in it. The bad guys need the thing thats now growing in thefrost in the pond- the first ice person, so they can make loads more- and the good guys have to stop them.
The resolution to this threat will surely annoy those who dislike the tendencay for emotion to win the day- usually love but in this case the tears of a dying girl.
It works better here in a xmas tale than it does in some previous episodes (yeah looking at you Closing Time and Night Terrors). So on the whole the actual threat/plot is entertaining enough but nothing more than average.
Fortunetly the snowman stuff is as I said just there to hang the real story on- and thats the story of how the Doctor met Clara/Oswin (again) and got back into the universe.
This side to the episode is simply marvellous. The dialogue between the ensemble cast sparkles and is full of trademark Moffat wit.
A welcome return is made by the trio of aliens that assisted the Doctor at Demons Run; Madame Vastra the Silurian lizard lady, her wife Jenna and Comander Strax the Sonataran clone warror forced to be a nurse as a penance.
And boy does Moffat have fun with these characters. Throw away referencs include Conan Doyle basing Shelrock and Watson on Madame Vastra and Jenny but having to change it, not becuase she is a lizard lady but because he cant have two women sharing rooms together. The Doctor also does a brief turn as Sherlock, including cape and derstalker, and if my ears were not playing tricks on me I am sure I detected a cheeky play on the Sherlock theme from Murray Gold during that scene. Of course its not the first time the Doctor has pretended to be Sherlock holmes, the 4th did it too, in just the same over the top disguise.
Which accidently leads me onto a tangent. This episode is full of stuff for long term Who fans, which is unusual in a xmas special. None of it inteferes witt the episode if you dont make the connections, but if you do its full of rewarding moments. And it starts with the opeing titles.
The familar since the series return time tunnel effect is gone and a blend of clasic Who style intros replaces it, including the Doctors face momentarly appearing as it used to in classic Who. And the new music arrangment of the thems as gone back to including the synth sounds closer to the original.
Then of course there is the umbrella, not the same one used by 7th Doctor but they way Smith handles and swings is could not fail to remind any old Whovian of Mccoys Doctor who was almost never without his question mark umbrella.
The return to roots contineus with the new look Tardis- the outside is more aged as it was in classic and the inside is a mix of tributes to Who of old- the console is reminscent of the 1st through 3rd Doctors, the added beeps and sound effects harken back to the console room of 5- and I loved the spinny top bit with the Gallifrayian writing.
In keeping with thee Doctora mood for the first half of this episode its a sleeker but colder interior- more scifi and less whimsical than 11's previous console room and definetly more classic Who.
So anyway, back to the meat of the thing which is the introducion of the new companion, Clara.
JLC gets to show off a bit in this episode as she plays essentially two versions of the same charcater. Clara has a double life- part time cockney bargirl and part time posh governess to a typicaly repressed Victorian widowers children.
Her governes personna has more than a touch of a young Mary Poppins about her, as she tells the chidlren as she tucks them in that she was born behind the clock face of Big Ben and that she invented fish becasue she didnt like to swim alone- and this being Moffat these things might even be true.
Whilst her character is not quite as quick tongued and sure of herself as Oswin in Asylum she retains a plucky, resiliant character and a great deal of smarts - demonstrated well in the episode first by her word game with Madame Vastra and then by working out the Doctors plan on the rooftop - and there is even a bustle joke in there for Mrs Figg to enjoy. Sheis always postively harming and no denying pleasing on the eye.
You may have noticed I have barely mentioned the Doctor, and I really should. Matt is so asured and comfortable in the role now that he owns every moment of his time on screen- the episode finds him in retirment mode, crabbit, defeated, fed up and not interested in doing anything anymore. He has retired the Tardis to a cloud reached by an invisible ladder which you get to the top of very quickly because the ladder is shorter on the inside- its pure whimsy and one of those areas where Who delibrately blurs the lines beween fairytale and scifi- and it also give the episode one of its most xmasy and gorgeous visuals as Clara goes up the ladder above the snowcovered Victroian London skyline.
Talking of beautiful shots there is a first in this- the first evr single shot from outside the Tardis to inside in 50 years- its so seemless, and you are so used to the idea of the TARDIS being bigger on the inside that the amazingness of the shot might go right past you- but its a great bit of technical wizardry.
Clara of course is the reason the Doctor comes out of retirment- and slowly but surely she intrigues the Doctor enough, and is relentles enough in her pursuit of him, to draw him out and back into events. But just when you think you might have half a clue as to where Moffat is going with this Moffat kills her stone dead and buries her. Yup- shortest new companion time ever. 3/4 of an episode and Moffat does it again.
And we learn from her gravestone her middle name was Oswin.
So she is the same person who was turned into a Dalek and made imaginary souffles in Asylum- and she died then too, and she led a duel life then too.
And the Doctor, having worked out the connection, is off back into the universe to find Clara/Oswin and solve the mystery of her.
And from the series preview trailer that folowed the episode it seems that the incarnation of Clara that will be travelling with the Doctor is a third version from contemporary times. Unless she dies too of course.
Oh Moffat how youlike to tease us!
So for a xmas episode it broke some xmas rules- first it was darker in tone than Moffs previous two xmas episodes, and secondly it was connected quite strongly to the series 7 arc, both backwards and forwards.
As a result there is more in this for the fan than the casual viewer- and for the casual viewer the actual snowman stroy might not seem strong enough to carry the day, its never less than entertaining but the main meat of this is about the Doctor and Clara, and that side is damn near perfect Who tv.
Couple of final things of note- at the end of the episode the Doctor picks up a business card, on it says "Great Intelligence" the name of the villians company and that the alien entity gives to itelf.
The Doctor says that he is sure he knows the name and that it 'rings a bell'- well it should but it was about 800 years ago. The Great Intelligence was an enemy of the Doctor on a couple of occasions during the 2nd Doctors time on the show.
This explains a bit of the episode, the point of which, will pass most viewers by- the Doctors lunchbox with the map of the London Underground on it in which he puts the bit of ice lady.
The Great Intelligence first appeared in the story 'The Abonimable Snowmen'- in which rather than snowmen it was robotic yeti the GI was tying to take over with- it used the YETI again when it came up with its a masterplan- in Web of Feaar- in which they took over London via, yup you guessed it, the London Underground- a plan seemingly inspired by the lunchbox the Doctor pointedly shows to the GI- making this episode a prequal to the 2nd Doctor story!
And also deserving of a bow from fandom to Moffat, remember the Doctors line, "rings a bell"- the abominable Sowman story begins with the 2nd Doctor returning a bell to a monastry in Tibet.
As a further aside the idea for this episode came in part from an unused Douglas Adams script entitled The Doctor retires'

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Some of my favourite quotes from the xmas episode-
- Spoiler:
- Good evening, I'm a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife.- Madame Vastra
this house is under attack, remain calm human scum!- Strax
If you try to escape, you will be obliterated...may I have your coat...-Strax
There's a man, called the Doctor, and he lives on a cloud.- Clara
Doctor- "Where is it?"
Strax- "Where's what, Sir?"
Doctor- "I sent you to get the memory worm."
Strax- "Did you? When? Who's he? What are we doing here? Look! It's been snowing!"
Doctor- "You didn't use the gauntlets did you?"
Strax- "Why would I need the gauntlets? (conspiratorially) Do you want me to get the memory worm?"
Strax: Sir! Permission to express my opposition to your current apathy.
The Doctor: Permission Granted
Strax: *Straightens up* Sir! I am opposed to your current apathy.
I suggest a full frontal assault with automated laser monkeys, scalpel mines...and acid!- Strax
(I dont know what an automated laser monkey is- but I want one!)
Its smaller on the outside- Clara describing the TARDIS

Re: Doctor Who [4]
I really liked this episode! I was actually getting tired of the Ponds and the Doctor, it was too much of the same thing. This episode was a breath of fresh air for me! The re-modeling of the episode was exactly what I needed. New Tardis, new characters (sort of), new music, and a new companion who is insistant, but not as bratty as Amy. JLC and Smith have alot of chemistry, and I'm excited to see the rest of the series now!
The writing seemed alot better than it has been, too. I particulary liked the Sherlock Holmes bit, which I thought was a nice little tease. Moffat's ideas were seeming to become a bit recycled, and I think starting over from scratch and doing something completley new helped him a great deal. I thought the whole Clara story would be like the River Song story ((( Is she still on the show???)))) but I was pleasantly surprised that she wasn't!
The effects this time were really good, except for the snowmen. I thought the snow looked kind of fake (but then again, it was!) and I thought the snow being the villian was kind of weak as well. Almost too juvenile for me.
{{{{{{{{{{{{{And why did the snow eat people? That was never explained...}}}}}}}}}} The show in general was getting a bit too goofy, but this episode was a good balance of serious and playful (Loved Strax!)
So I'm excited for Who again!
When does series 7 continue????

I agree with the Queen!
I was even getting annoyed at River, and I loved her.
Clara is more like Rose than Amy. Thank Eru for that! And the new Tardis is nice.

Petty do you still have a link to that site you gave earlier this year with all the episodes on it? that was quite good, and never splurged weird stuff.
I cant remember the name of the site, its not Daily Motion, and its not the Romanian one. its something to do with smellysocks lockers.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Apparently my mom decided to watch the Doctor Who Christmas special on her own yesterday. I was at my dad's in the evening so I didn't even know that the Christmas special was being broadcast in the US. My mom knows next to nothing about DW, but she's heard a lot about it from her friends, so she was curious. She didn't know what to make of the special, but I got her to watch Blink with me since I had loved that one and found it very accessible since the Doctor is in the background. Also, I've loved everything I've seen of Tennant so far.
Anyway, she said that she liked Blink much more than the Snowmen, but that she's still trying to figure out what the appeal of Doctor Who is. I'll let you guys know if she comes to any conclusions about that.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
lol
Give her context Eldo- I take her you have made her aware it a show acors generations here- thats its watched as a family thing from 4 year olds up to ready for the grave.
I have often heard Americans have a problem working out who (sic) it is for- apprently you dont really make drama shows delibretly for all the family to watch together.
And then point out to her it only pretends to be a sci-fi- and that in fact its genre crossing, it can be scifi, fantasy, gritty drama, whatever it wants to be.
So if she doesnt find the Snowmen very scary tell her to try to imagine she is 4 and seeing it! One of the things Who allows is for the old to remember what it was like being the young.
And if she cant see the appeal in a wonderful magikal being that can travel all of space and time in a magic box saving worlds whilst wearing a cool bowtie, there may be no hope for her!
Nuwho episodes Id recommend to give an idea of the show (in series order)
Fathers Day
The Empty Child.The Doctor Dances
The Girl in the Fireplace
The Runaway Bride
Human Nature/Family of Blood
Blink
The Fires of Pompeii
Silence in the library/Forest of Dead
Midnight
The Waters of Mars
Vampires of Venice
Vincent and the Doctor
A xmas Carol
The Doctors Wife
The Girl who waited
The God Complex
Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
Angels Take manhattan

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Thanks for the list of suggested episodes, Petty. She's interested in watching more but my own Who experience is quite limited so I'm not sure which to suggest. Fortunately the first six series of NuWho are all on Netflix so we have quite a bit to choose from.
