I dont agree that decrepit is another way of describing ancient- it is but with all the implications listed above added: wasted, weakened, worn out by age ect
I agree with your general descriptin of how Smaug should be however, but Im not sure thats how PJ is interpreting things. Especially now with this glimpse of a much darker looking Smaug than I expected.

Compare how dark Smaug looks in that to this painting by Howe of the same scene-

He should be old but still look magnificaint, terrifyingly beautiful even.

Well, Galadriel is old, numerically, yet she still looked lovely, even when she did her "stronger than the foundations of the earth" scene, where she went all green & octopussy like, she still looked fiercesome. I felt, reading the book, that Smaug, although as old as time, was still a force to be reckoned with & not to be taken for granted. Dont think you can have one over a dragon cos he may be so old that hes now jittery, No, he'l rise up & surprise you, all red gold, gleaming & magnificent, & with enough life & power to rise above any foe.

hey, guys remember, Smaug, like Gollum, is mostly in the third film, and they changed Gollum's design.

also. If beorn isn't going to be in the first movie... they are going to cut it before they even reach mirk wood.. that doesn't make any sense, because then the WC won't have anything battling to do either.. where do they get the fill-material from?

Its def not his shadow Mrs Figg- Ive watched it frame by frame slow mo and you can definetly see one full wing, a part of his back and his tail- and they are all black.
The shot is from above Smaug looking down on him.

Smaug does look darker than I expected but the colors are a bit off since the video is someone filming their TV. There are other colors that are off compared to the other high-quality videos. Hopefully that's the case with Smaug as well.

I do hope so Eldo- Ive been keeping an eye out for a hi-def version but no luck so far.
Still concerend by PJ's description however especially taken in light with rumours of a zombie Smaug possessed by Sauron.
Assuming these are true there might be some twisted PJ logic to making Smaug 'decrepit' then resurrecting him as something much worse and more fearsome once possessed by Sauron.
Although I still hope and pray those rumours are just that- rumours.

I haven't seen a HQ version either, but I'll keep checking.

I recall hearing something about Smaug and the Necromancer working together but what's this about zombie Smaug? I'm afraid I missed that news. pale

Came up on TorN- there where a few isolated quotes- Smaug being in the battle of five armies and the Necromancer fleeing north from the WC which sparked it-I'm not 100% sure but at least the first quote was attributed to Cumberbum.
Also something about two different actors were credited playing the Necromancer- and Cumberbum, as he is down for both roles was because they 'merged' into one.
I cant remember now if this bit was just specualtion but there was mention of Smaug/Sauron fleeing to Mordor and Smaug breathes his flame at the top of Barad-dur which forms the fiery eye- and thats Saurons spirit leaving Smaug and thus explains why he has no physical form in LotR's.

I hope so Mrs Figg- but then if I had been told Gandalf would knock Denthor onto the pyre and he would then run half a mile on fire- or that Frodo would reject Sam over Gollum and send him away on the steps, or that the army of dead would win the battle of the Pelennor- I would have said they were having a laugh too. No

I recall Cumberbatch saying a bunch of outrageous stuff but I think he backtracked from that. Doesn't mean it wasn't true, I suppose, but I can try to give him the benefit of a doubt. Razz

Anyway, there have been enough weird rumors that I'll won't get too worked up over this.

New image showing Thorin at the Battle of Azanulbizar during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs (in a flashback or a prologue, presumably). That's the East-gate of Moria in the background. The orange glow is probably coming from the Balrog.

Some over at TORN are wondering if Smaug will, at one point, slather himself in melted gold, thus 'explaining' his colouring.

I'm not sure it's anything more than wondering however... or if anyone actually used the word slather.

I would like to confuse rumour with fact here Wink
