Goodness, potentially two bad Stephen King films in two months? What a to-do!

Ugh, another 32 years until it's released? And I thought the Marvel films' release schedule was ridiculous!

Kenneth Branagh is helming a remake of Murder on the Orient Express, and is playing Poirot himself.

Much as I'm a fan of Branagh, the idea does not make me happy. I keep catching broadcasts of the 1974 Sydney Lumet version, and except for the moustache that Agatha Christie complained about, it's utter, captivating perfection. There's simply no reason to do this - and Finney's Poirot is untouchable even by the likes of Branagh.

I'll see it when it comes out, I suppose, but only if I can block the original out of my memory.

{{Noo! David Suchet for the win- played the role on British Tv from 1989 to 2013- the only actor to have played the role an adaptation of every single Christie Poirot story. }}

Suchet was very, very good, but his Poirot was colder and more cerebral, not as captivating as Finney's, even if closer to Agatha Christie's conception.  I don't think Finney's version could have been sustained for more than one film but he's fabulously fun to watch.

And the cast for the original Orient Express was even more breathtaking than what Branagh could muster.  He's coming close with himself, Judy Dench, Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Michelle Pfeiffer - but I can't see it matching perfection of that first cast.

' not as captivating as Finney's'- Halfy

{{Mmmm I'd have to disagree. Not as instantly captivating maybe- but given the luxury of both time and following how Christie developed the character over the books the cumulative effect of watching Suchet produces a much more captivating nuanced performance in the long run.

Although I admit to not having seen the film version in along time.

It would be interesting to watch the film and the Suchet version of the story as a direct comparison.

'even if closer to Agatha Christie's conception'

No if about it I'd say, its right off the page, every nuance, every tick, every habit, every fussy little Belgian mannerism is precisely and meticulously present. }}}

Kenneth Branagh bores me into a deep slumber. I watched his version of "Wallander" & hated it. The only thing I liked of his was the baddie in "Wild wild west" with Will Smith & Kevin Kline. ( love Kevin, he's so funny )

Henry V would not put you to sleep, nor would his turn in Othello. But except for Dead Again his modern performances have been slow. He was a good director for Thor.

I'm happy to give Henry V a go Very Happy I feel he's better behind the camera than in front.

Oh he was totally in front of the camera as Henry V himself, but was on both sides. If you haven't seen his St Crispin's day speech, it's the best of the best.

{{Superb version, my favourite Henry V. Also really like Montjoy the French Herald in that version too. And no one can cheer a speech with as much gleefully insane vigour as Brian Blessed!

Brannaghs also good in front of and behind the camera in Much Ado About Nothing, if you are in the mood for a more romantic comedy Shakepseare play.

And if your moods more modern I can recommend him playing the real Colonel Tim Collins who led the British Troops in Iraq. }}

But all his characters still have some Branagh in them. I don't think he can vanish into Poirot the way Suchet or Finney did. I may be wrong, we'll see.

Yes! Go look.

It's a mark of how far the franchise has fallen that I didn't even know this movie existed. Rolling Eyes If it actually turns out worth seeing, someone wake me up.

A number of early impressions claimed that it was a return to form, but those are notoriously unreliable, and most critics' reviews have been more negative. I'm gonna go see it despite my reservations because POTC was a big part of my childhood and I'm not as negative about the sequels as some people are. I genuinely think that the second film was good and that the third was worth seeing as a conclusion to the trilogy despite its flaws, though the less said about the fourth, the better.

So I ended up seeing POTC 5 with my dad tonight; we saw the first three together so I was glad to get to to this one together too. It was an enjoyable enough 2.5 hours but in trying to describe the movie the word that most comes to mind is superficial. Not that any of the Pirates movies are particularly deep, but the first three clearly had more thought and care put into them to maintain at least partial consistency and keep the trilogy feeling cohesive. To soon to say exactly where this one will fit in my ranking of the series (which hitherto has been 1 > 2 > 3 > 4) ... there were some ways in which I think it was better than 4, but I have a lot of the same reservations. That said, I'm glad that it was more of a sequel to AWE than something barely-related that was tacked on, like OST. And as a fan of the series it was nice to see

Spoiler:

The humor was kind of hit or miss but Paul McCartney's cameo was one of the funnier moments. Woulda been funny regardless of who they had in the bit role, but

Spoiler:

made it even more amusing.

Looks real, looks good, looks thought provoking. I see a couple of actors I like already. I'm very fond of Mark Rylance for a start. I remember my nan & granddad speaking of the little boats, the ones from Ramsgate & probably a few from Whitstable & Margate.

Just noticed my post count says 12345 Very Happy
