Re: The YouTube thread [2]
That one's really interesting and edgy, never seen it before.
The top artists always refer back and know what's come before. Jazz musicians can play back improvised solos from recordings decades ago - it's part of learning the craft. I think Michael Jackson's dance moves are based solidly on the classics, especially Sammy Davis Jr. But now MJ is considered classic.

That girl can bounce!
I know it's not olympics, but the gymnastics are the only part of the Olympics I really care about. I'm pretty ho-hum about a fast runner, but the floor show and uneven bars especially just grabs me.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
I love old films from years ago that have been colourised. Once they step out from the black & white they become real to me & I can feel something for them, whether its love or hate but its always with wanting to know more. These children, what was their life like ? Did they grow up & live a long life ?

I was taken by the ice skaters. These days when someone straps on some skates they feel like they have to behave differently - zoom and swoop around. But those people, you could hardly tell they had skates: just strolling around and chatting as nonchalantly as in a grassy park.

I loved the double decker train at 6.57 odd & further on in that film, you just see an umbrella sneak in from the left & nudge a boy out of the way

Those blade runner videos didn't last long. Glad I watched them when I could.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
Had to look up how they work. We all have red, green and blue receptors, each responsive to a range of wavelengths centered on those colors. These ranges overlap somewhat with the neighboring range so that intermediate colors like yellow are seen by the mix of red and green. What happens with some types of colorblindness is the red and green receptors overlap so much that they almost can't be told apart. So the glasses block a band in between, causing separation.
Of course if you have a pure wavelength that falls in this band (like yellow) it would look black. But most "colors" are actually broad, and so in cases like yellow or blue-green, you can lose the central wavelength and still get the same impression: equal amounts of green and red are seen, so it looks yellow.
I'd say for such a simple technique the glasses are wildly overpriced at $450 or so. They get away with it because the effects are so striking. But they could sell even more at a quarter that price for non prescription, and add the cost of prescription lenses if needed.
Sort of remarkable it took so long for such a simple idea to be figured out, so I guess the inventor deserves to clean up for a bit, but I call it price gouging. They should drop the price so that everyone who needs it can get one, make a lot more people happy and still make the same toal profit.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
The mode of operation is to block out part of the light to produce separation between red and green. Maybe 20%? I would think they'd have a bluish tint (white minus yellow), but not as dark as they look. Freeze it at 3 seconds, you can see the blue as it's held up against the white wall.
(I'm now seeing a range of prices, from $35 up to $450)

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
it would be good if they can have prescription lenses as well so people can use them as ordinary glasses, also if they could have clearer lenses so that they can be worn indoors, I imagine they are a bit dark. it is odd that they choose to see colour for the first time in ordinary settings, I would go to a sunset or a forest of flowers, but I guess even a garden centre is mind-blowingly amazing if you have never seen colours before. They seem to go really crazy over purple for some reason, it seems to be a really an incredible colour

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
Purple can be a mix of red and blue - if red seems to include green, then it would look white to them.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
It depends on how the purple is made. If it's a pure wavelength on the short end of blue they can see it, but if (more typically) it's a mix of red and blue, then it will be pretty pale to them, I'd think. (but I don't know)
