{{{Its an interesting aspect of the Doctor/Clara storyline, and in fact Danny too.

We know Clara had a thing for the Doctor, at least by the time of 11's final story, as she says the following under the influence of the Truth Field-

'I'm an English teacher from planet Earth, and I've run off with a man from space because I really fancy him.'

and in Last Christmas old Clara says- There was one other man, but that would never have worked out.....He was impossible.'

And a strong case could be made that towards the end of his time 11 was at best playful with Clara, and at worst openly flirty with her. And in fact that accusation is made by Vastra in her conversation with Clara in Deep Breath-

'VASTRA: He looked like your dashing young gentleman friend. Your lover, even.
CLARA: Shut up.
VASTRA: But he is the Doctor. He has walked this universe for centuries untold, he has seen stars fall to dust. You might as well flirt with a mountain range.
CLARA: I did not flirt with him.
VASTRA: He flirted with you.

And the Doctor confirms this himself, in what is to a certain extent their break up scene-

DOCTOR: Clara, I'm not your boyfriend.
CLARA: I never thought you were.
DOCTOR: I never said it was your mistake.

You have to remember when he regens he is the same person, but with a new personality, effected by the previous ones, but a different personality.

12's personality and his feelings towards Clara are much more like an over-protective father, or indeed grand-father, just as 1 was towards Susan.

Clara's feelings on the other hand are another matter. She cant just change her personality to not feel the same way about him any more. And this is where Danny Pink enters the scene- he is the rebound guy. An aspect of their relationship never picked up on. But she meets him within two weeks of the Doctor telling her their relationship has fundamentally changed, and she goes after him in classic rebound style. It was doomed from the outset, he was a decent, good man, but he had a controlling side that was never going to work out with Clara, and they didn't share many interests, she wanted to travel, he wanted to settle down and put down roots. And its because the basis it began on was flawed, she was on the rebound, she picked him for the wrong reasons.

But there are a few moments here and there, usually played through silent looks by the Doctor, where he remembers when he was 11 and young looking and there are hints of regret, that he is not that man in her life any more, but it being Capaldi he makes a single look not only include that, but a wry acceptance of the situation and rigthtness of it with it.}}}
