I'm wondering if it's going to be Autumn '16-Spring '17, Capaldi is directing a couple of episodes of Veep and a feature film this year, whilst Moffat is busy with sherlock, so it's very unlikely they will have time to fit in the whole of series 10 this year. Moffat considered leaving this Christmas, so I think we can assume series 10 will be his last as showrunner, the spilt series will give his sucessor more time to set up the next series...whether Capaldi stays on (hopefully he will) is yet to be seen...

Thought the picture from the Moffat piece on women in Who was worth reproducing, as he says under his stewardship the show employs more women than in any other era in its history.

Not sure what you mean by that given every episode so far this series has had far more female characters than male. And no male central characters at all so far other than the Doctor.

- The Express- 'Peter Capaldi's finest hour as the Time Lord....The Zygon Invasion and The Zygon Inversion are two watertight stories that work both as two separate entities and as a complete piece.
However, it's Peter Capaldi 's epic speech that really stands out...it's a lengthy bit of dialogue that we don't usually encounter on Doctor Who, especially since the series was revived in 2005...Peter gives a powerful performance as a Doctor trying to maintain a fragile ceasefire, opting for diplomacy over militancy. Throughout his speech, he never loses his flow or passion.
At times it feels as if the television screen falls away and we're watching a stage production, such is the strength of his acting.....It's so close to the bone that it's almost painful yet so on point as well....The Zygon Inversion is possibly the best political parable that Doctor Who has ever attempted to do and it works. The two parts together make a fascinating morality play that will hopefully inspire a new generation to strive for peace and negotiation in an increasingly unstable world.
It's one of the most interesting and relevant stories to have featured on the series for a long time and has secured itself a place among other great pieces of modern science fiction.'
The Guardian- 'It was pointed out a while ago by our friends at the Radio Times that the 12th Doctor had yet to have his definitive “Doctor moment” – such as Eccleston’s “Everybody lives!” or Smith’s grand address atop Stonehenge, or even McCoy’s “unlimited rice pudding”.
Well, here it was this week, and then some, and then quite a considerable bit more. As he delivered his passionate, eloquent takedown of Zygon rebel Bonnie (Jenna Coleman on lipsmacking evil-twin form), this version of the Doctor was comprehensively nailed, skewering perfectly who this man is. That brusque exterior is a barely held together veneer to rein in a compassion and a frustration constantly trying to outdo each other within a heart as big as the Medusa cascade; an exasperated parent who can never do enough. Or indeed, you might say, a Scotsman. This Doctor has never been written better, Capaldi has never channelled Tom Baker more, that sequence is cemented instantly as the “Capaldi moment” in clip shows for the rest of time.'
Digital Spy- 'Doctor Who offered up its finest episode of the year so far with 'The Zygon Invasion' - a thrilling caper with a conscience, it combined surprises, scares and wit with a layer of social commentary that wasn't subtle but perfectly pitched for kids....Now teamed with showrunner Steven Moffat, writer Peter Harness delivers a tale that's less frenetic and able to dig deeper into the human-Zygon connection....'The Zygon Inversion' continues to explore themes of extremism, xenophobia and tolerance through a fantasy filter...'The Zygon Inversion' is not as frantic as 'Invasion', but what it lacks in action and spectacle, it makes up for with significant character moments. Particularly once what appears to be a race against time to reach a magic MacGuffin - the 'Osgood Box' - becomes something far more complex and interesting...His (the Doctor's) emotional, grandiose confrontation with both Kate and 'Zygella' is spellbinding. 'Inversion' grows bleak as it strains to make its point, but it should be forgiven that. Because ultimately this is smart, powerful science fiction - a television drama that educates and entertains. And after all, isn't that always supposed to be the remit?'
Radio Times- 'From his first words (“Any questions?”) as he fumbles with a parachute on the beach, to his final, sobering remark to Clara (“I’ll be the judge of time”), Peter Capaldi is majestic. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve extolled the star of the show. Here he delivers another commanding performance that makes me totally believe in him as the Doctor.
Capaldi’s tour de force is, of course, the Time Lord’s peace negotiation in the Black Archive. An incredible piece of writing and acting. The scene lasts a full ten minutes as the Doctor runs the gamut of emotions in his effort to make Clara/Bonnie/Zygella stand down and “break the cycle” of cruelty and war. The Time Lord and the writers (Peter Harness and Steven Moffat) are wearing their hearts and political colours on their sleeves. It’s wonderful to watch and absorb. Real-world self-appointed “peacemakers” take note.'
Metro- 'Having given us an allegorical take on immigration, asylum seekers and refugees that made the Zygons a more nuanced and sympathetic threat than the standard villain of the week, The Zygon Inversion unexpectedly becomes a story that is as much about the Doctor and the futility of the cycle of war...not before Peter Capaldi has had the opportunity to deliver a monologue that goes to the heart of the Doctor’s guilt and pain.
His speech underpins everything the character represents. And the use of the Osgood boxes – mere McGuffins to force both sides to think and talk for long enough to defuse the conflict – is a typically elegant Doctor-style resolution. They are no more than empty vessels that allow him to channel his preferred weapon: the power of words.
Capaldi is the best he has ever been in the final act, marrying the defining qualities of his predecessors – Matt Smith’s energy, David Tennant’s angst and Christopher Eccleston’s world-weariness – to give us a glimpse behind the mask the Doctor wears. The Zygons aren’t the only ones who can disguise their true selves...Large portions of this two-parter represented Doctor Who at its best. An iconic enemy, a global threat, some even-handed commentary on real world events and some sparkling dialogue with minimal reliance on action sequences or CGI. This was old-school Who straight out of the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker eras... what was still for me the strongest story of this series so far but this was so nearly an all-time classic. Instead it was merely very good, and an adventure worthy of celebrating the Zygons’ 40th anniversary.'
Den of Geek - 'In the case of The Zygon Inversion, however, I'm calling this one a triumph. I really, really liked it a lot. No, sod it: I think it's an outstanding, bold, ambitious, brilliant, gripping piece of television. A testament to what Doctor Who can do, that many of its contemporaries over the year can't get within pissing distance of.
Never let anyone tell you that sci-fi, fantasy, so-called children's programmes and their ilk belong in a nice little box away from the mainstream. Doctor Who has just blasted a 45 minute lesson in tolerance, the state of the world, war and the futility of conflict straight into people's living rooms while The X-Factor was on the other side.
I really can't applaud this enough....the first is the utterly dominating sequence, where Peter Capaldi out-Peter Capaldis everyone on the entire planet. If you're like me, there are still goosebumps on your arm.
Because as his speech continues, and continues, and continues, it's as if the world stops still.
Thus, with Kate and Bonnie both in possession of Osgood boxes that they believe hold the necessary tools for war, the Doctor starts talking. Nearly ten minutes later, he's still talking. And if you weren't listening at the start, it's pretty much guaranteed that you won't be able to take your eyes off the screen by the end.
This, I'd argue, is the best work the already-excellent Peter Capaldi has done in Doctor Who to date. "There are safeguards beyond safeguards. I did this on a very important for me", he says, launching into the impassioned speech, using nothing more than words to try and prevent the end of the world.
Two opposing forces - represented by Bonnie and Kate - with boxes and buttons in front of them to cause mass devastation. And the Doctor simply has to talk them out of it.
Capaldi throws everything at this. He switches tone, accent and verocity with a staggeringly precise degree of control. I couldn't take my eyes off him, and every time Kate or Bonnie entered the conversation, I was practically counting the seconds until the Doctor retorted. "This is not a game, Kate", he suddenly roars. And roar is surely the world.
It doesn't matter that the boxes are empty, ultimately. Because the Doctor wins out using pure intelligence, reason, and argument.'

- I had an odd moment about just over half way through this episode where I thought 'mmm, not sure about this', not much happening that felt like it directly related to the opener set up with the splinter group then I realised I had watched more than half the episode and not even noticed time passing- which isn't the mark of boredom, but it was some frustration as it wasn't about what I thought it would be about- it takes a, well inversion, in terms of story telling- from the global to a room, from the action and terror, and threat to what all conflict comes down to in the end- sitting down and talking. That the Doctor shortcuts to the talking bit, avoiding the war bit, and does so with nothing at all but two empty boxes and the power of words- that's a great Who resolution for my money.
I do have some issues over some of the direction however, much is very good, but I am not sure the director knows quite how to handle the shifts in pacing whilst keeping it all moving- but then they shoot the Doctors big speech really well.

- I had an odd moment about just over half way through this episode where I thought 'mmm, not sure about this', not much happening that felt like it directly related to the opener set up with the splinter groupThis I agree with, most of the supporting characters from Episode 1 just disappeared... then I realised I had watched more than half the episode and not even noticed time passing- which isn't the mark of boredom, but it was some frustration as it wasn't about what I thought it would be about- it takes a, well inversion, in terms of story telling- from the global to a room, from the action and terror, and threat to what all conflict comes down to in the end- sitting down and talking. That the Doctor shortcuts to the talking bit, avoiding the war bit, and does so with nothing at all but two empty boxes and the power of words- that's a great Who resolution for my moneyNothing wrong with talky episodes, I just think the story felt kinda cheap and meandering for an earth invasion episode, dare I say it...I wanted more explosions....
I do have some issues over some of the direction however, much is very good, but I am not sure the director knows quite how to handle the shifts in pacing Another defiite issue hear...would have worked better as one, longer episode rather than a 2 parter I think...whilst keeping it all moving- but then they shoot the Doctors big speech really well.

- Thats kind of along the lines of what i mean by it not really being anything about the episode but my own frustrations it wasn't what I expected. The first part is a classic earth invasion premise, with a twist, but the second part is not an earth invasion story at all. Once I got over that hurdle, and especially on a second watch, it was far more enjoyable without my own expectations in the way.

The way they seem to have done two parters this time out is not to make them traditional two parters- often the linking element is one character or more commonly a set of themes that link them. Yet each part in itself is self contained in style and tone.
I haven't done it yet, waiting till the series is over, but will be interesting to watch each two parter together as one single story and see how they work as continuous pieces of 1 and a half hours story telling.
