I thought Cold War was a solid episode- nothing spectacular but nothing wrong with it either. Got some good characters, and a good classic Who base under siege feel to the plot.
And I think Crimson Horror is the best mix of Gatiss' love of Victoriana and the macabre with Who. And the releationship between the main villain and her blinded daughter is well realised.
Robots of Sherwood has its moments, its quite entertaining overall, but its mainly Capaldi's comic timing that saves a lot of it.

More soundbites form cast, writers, directors and Moffat regards series 9-

Steven Moffat: “As to changing it up with the companion [being a young female from present day Earth] … Wait and see. We absolutely could vary it.”

Peter Capaldi: “I think [the Doctor] probably will be different again when he comes back [in Season 9] … we’re still pushing to find out who this character is – there are more mysteries about him.”

Steven Moffat: “I’ve figured out the cliffhanger to the penultimate episode of [Season 9]. And it’s a whopper. Ohh, I don’t think you’ll see this coming!”

Steven Moffat: “I know what [Season 9’s] arc is, I know where we’re going, I know what’s going to happen in broad terms throughout the show. It’s feeling very exciting!”

Steven Moffat: “We’ve got some other stuff lined up from other writers – some new, some old, some middle-aged … I’m pretty excited. We’ve got some very, very good stuff coming.”

Phil Ford: “Obviously, I would jump at doing more Doctor Who.”

Peter Harness: “I’d love to write for Doctor Who for as long as I possibly can … I’m very happy to write past, present, future, parallel dimension or whatever.”

Peter Capaldi: “…we’re starting to have conversations about next year and I’m like ‘There are some amazing things coming along there!’ – Steven is telling me and I’m like, ‘Wow! Yeah!’ We’ve got some great ideas coming for 2015.”

Mark Gatiss: “…I do have a preference for historical stories. But I would love to do one set in the future. ”

Neil Cross: “There’s a whole bunch of stuff I want to do … I have to find out from Steven [Moffat] what his intentions for the Doctor are and what sort of stories he wants me to write.”

Chris Chibnall: “…it would be great to write for [Jenna Coleman].”

And a bunch of quotes from Jenna from recent conventions-

Clara and the Doctor’s relationship will surprise viewers in Season 9
“It’s really interesting where it will take them next… it’s a direction that no-one was expecting.”

“The moment [the Eleventh Doctor] was regenerating was the moment [Clara] realised she was in love with him.”

“You pick up a script and you think you’ve got an inkling of what is going to happen and you’re always wrong.”

“Having one Doctor is tiring. Having three … I was reduced to a giggling girl.”

If Jenna could be any other Doctor Who companion, she’d be Amy Pond.

(on Capaldi) She says he’s “the most sensitive, joyful and witty man” she’s ever met.

On how long she will remain on the show-

“You’ll have to wait and see is the most boring answer.”

No, its just her saying what happened in the episodes- the last of 11 and the first of 12.
She confesses to fancying him in the truth field on Trenzalore, and you can see it at the moment 11 regens- then Deep Breath is all about her coping with losing 11 and trying to accept 12. All that stuff with Vastra about her dashing young hero, and at the end when the Doctor says "Clara, Im not your boyfriend." and she says, "I never said you were," and he replies, "I never said it was your fault."
She is just talking about that.

'she’d be Amy Pond.'

Fine taste indeed. Nod

Big Finish have announced their license to produce Doctor Who (and spin off) audio dramas for the first Eight Doctors has been extened through to 2020:

http://www.bigfinish.com/news/v/doctor-who-licenced-extended-to-2020

With the recent UNIT announcement I'm kinda gutted there has been no hint of a New Series license, but perhaps they are saving the biggest news to last.

More announcements to follow.

(Interesting to note that new character Helen Sinclair, the Eighth Doctor had a companion Izzy Sinclair in the comics, she appeared in the Big Finish release 'The Company of Friends'...related maybe?)

'Big Finish have announced a new Eighth Doctor Series, Doom Coalition will be released in the Autumn.

Starring Paul McGann as the Doctor and Nicola Walker as his companion Liv Chenka, the series will see the TARDIS recalled to Gallifrey by the Time Lords, where they will be battling a new foe known only as The Eleven.

Doom Coalition is an epic saga that will span four box sets (a total of sixteen episodes) forming one breathtaking inter-connecting saga that will push the Doctor’s bravery and resourcefulness to its limits.

Producer David Richardson explained The overall story of Doom Coalition was devised by myself and Ken Bentley over the course of many walks to the studio. Our framework has been fleshed out by a fantastic team of writers, and realised by a brilliant cast – and I can’t wait for the roller-coaster to begin in November
The series will be directed by Ken BentleyDoom Coalition is unlike anything we’ve attempted before. It’s on a scale that we hope will satisfy loyal listeners. It’s also a new, completely stand-alone adventure, making it a great place to start if you’re listening to Doctor Who on audio for the very first time.
The first box set will see a new addition to the TARDIS team when gifted philologist Helen Sinclair steps aboard in the second episode. Helen is played by Hattie Morahan, whose many leading credits include Bodies, Eternal Law, The Bletchley Circle and the upcoming film Mr Holmes.

Richardson explained the premise behind the character Helen is from 1963. She was, in part, inspired by Doctor Who’s first producer Verity Lambert – she’s a driven, career-minded woman in a male-dominated profession. And she’s a head-strong and capable companion in the mould of Barbara Wright, Sarah Jane Smith and Tegan Jovanka.

Hattie had been on our radar for some time and we’d been waiting for the right role to come along. When we were recording Dark Eyes 4 Hattie’s name came up during conversation and Paul got very enthusiastic, telling us how much he’d like to work with her. The pieces just fell into place. It was the most effortless casting ever.
Doom Coalition’s first episode also introduces a brand new villain – albeit one that the Doctor has been batting throughout his lives. The Eleven is a Time Lord who retains each one of his personalities every time he regenerates; now in his Eleventh incarnation, he is an insane sociopath. Captured by the Seventh Doctor and placed in confinement on Gallifrey, the Eleven has been contained for many years. But now he has escaped.

The Eleven is played by Mark Bonnar, who was recently seen in Channel 4’s Catastrophe, and won critical acclaim in The Line of Duty. His other leading credits include Shetland, Psychoville and Paradox.

The first volume’s cast also includes Robert Bathurst (Downton Abbey, Toast of London, Blandings), Caroline Langrishe (Dominick Hide, Lovejoy, Judge John Deed), Ramon Tikaram (Stella, Jupiter Ascending, Game of Thrones), David Yelland (Chariots of Fire, Poirot), John Woodvine (Doctor Who: The Armageddon Factor), Harry Myers (Bernice Summerfield), Esther Hall (Queer as Folk, Spooks, Rome) and Matthew Cottle (Game On, Citizen Khan).

Doom Coalition 1 is released in October 2015. The remaining three volumes will follow at six month intervals through 2016 and into 2017'- Gallifrey Base

Cool!

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

Doctor Who [10] - Page 24 Empty Re: Doctor Who [10]

Pettytyrant101 wrote:'Big Finish have announced a new Eighth Doctor Series, Doom Coalition will be released in the AutumnI'd better get a move on listening to Dark Eyes then!.

Starring Paul McGann as the Doctor and Nicola Walker as his companion Liv Chenka, the series will see the TARDIS recalled to Gallifrey by the Time Lords, where they will be battling a new foe known only as The ElevenI've already seen some people confuse this with the 11th Doctor Laughing Interesting he is recalled to Gallifrey...the license renewal made no reference to New Who so presumably they can't reference the time war...I'm in no hurry to see McGann's 'last' BF story, but I wouldn't want them to drag things out down to a licensing issue, I'm not a fan of his leather jacket look, and the longer it takes to get the time war, the lesser chance we have of more War Doctor stories...which could end up biting them in the arse, virtually everyone assumed the 8th Doctor destroyed Gallifrey (He does on a seperate occasion in the EDA books, which are partially confirmed to be in the same timeline as Big Finish) before Moffat decided otherwise, leaving the War Doctor as an unexplored anomaly could end up being a big mistake. That said I prefer to think of Eight as the Joyous Edwardian Explorer full of wonder at his perfectly fitting shoes..

Doom Coalition is an epic saga that will span four box sets (a total of sixteen episodes)They seem to be moving more and more into Box sets... forming one breathtaking inter-connecting saga that will push the Doctor’s bravery and resourcefulness to its limitsI prefer the format of the Main Range myself (Although the hour long stories are generally really good, they do feel kinda rushed), but I'll take any Eigtht Doctor stories I can get...

The series will be directed by Ken BentleyDoom Coalition is unlike anything we’ve attempted before Suspect . It’s on a scale that we hope will satisfy loyal listeners. It’s also a new, completely stand-alone adventure, making it a great place to start if you’re listening to Doctor Who on audio for the very first time. Thumbs Up
The first box set will see a new addition to the TARDIS team when gifted philologist Helen Sinclair steps aboard in the second episode. Helen is played by Hattie Morahan, whose many leading credits include Bodies, Eternal Law, The Bletchley Circle and the upcoming film Mr Holmes.

Richardson explained the premise behind the character Helen is from 1963According to the Wiki, the 8th Doctor had a companion Izzy Sinclair in the comics, and a companion Fitz Kreiner in the books, alos from 1963 (both appeared in BF's 'The Company of Friends) hmm.... She was, in part, inspired by Doctor Who’s first producer Verity Lambert – she’s a driven, career-minded woman in a male-dominated profession. And she’s a head-strong and capable companion in the mould of Barbara Wright, Sarah Jane Smith and Tegan JovankaWas hoping McGann would get a new male companion....

But now he has escaped.Sounds bonkers but brilliant, though I'm not keen on the idea of the 7th Doctor being involved...I thought this was supposed to be stand alone?

The remaining three volumes will follow at six month intervals through 2016 and into 2017'- Gallifrey BaseHopefully they could slip in a quick return to the main range as well, we never saw enough of Mary Shelley i.m.o

On a side note have you read any of the BBC Eighth Doctor books? I'm thinking about checking them out...

Doctor Who [10] - Page 24 Empty Re: Doctor Who [10]

More series 9 news-

'Not content with being among the breakout stars of one of TV’s biggest hits as Arya Stark on Game Of Thrones, Maisie Williams has landed a role on another slightly popular series- Doctor Who.
“I'm so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it’s such a big and important part of British culture,” Williams said with trademark enthusiasm. “I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”

Who boss and spoilerphobic overlord Steven Moffat welcome the new arrival, while dropping only small hints about what we can expect. “We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

Two new episode titles and writers announced too- the Girl Who Died is a historical set piece and sees a welcome return for Jamie Mathieson, and another historical episode, The Woman Who Lived, written by Catherine Tregenna.
No idea if those two episodes have any connection, but their titles are intriguing.

'The two stories will be directed by Ed Bazalgette, currently earning rave reviews for working on the BBC One 18th-century drama Poldark.'- Gallifrey Base

Just the thought of more Capaldi as the Doctor has been more than enough for me to be excited. bounce

Also good to see Moffat continues to bring in new talent, both writing and directing (he has over the years done particularly well on directors, getting a solid mix of well established respected directors and up and coming cuting edge directors onto the show)
