Re: Roll to Dodge!
Round One
Wednesday, the 12th of August:
Wednesday, the 12th of August:
- Petty Crumblebuckie-For All:
- [6] You walk from the station through town to the Old Shuck (getting your boots quite muddy). The barkeep, Dallin Staveley, is surprised to see anyone in his pub so early but lets you in after some banging. You introduce yourself as a traveling beer critic and make small-talk over over-priced pints (he charges 10d for three of them). When you slip him a few pence to grease him up a bit he assumes you are simply being generous with tips!
Still, you learn that it may frost later in the week and that a gentleman-farmer friend of his has had some trouble lately with gypsies trekking over his fields. Dallin mentions the recent murder, but doesn't tell you anything you don't know already.
After some time you see Ringo Drotts enter and ask after tent equipment. You avoid eye contact with him studiously.
- Lady Rose Summer-For All:
- [7] You walk to the post office through the rain and telegraph the alumni headquarters in Earsham, inquiring about any helpful bits of gossip. They should reply by Friday, and the post office will send a boy around to your room at the inn.
- Ringo Drotts-For All:
- [7] You walk to the Inn and inquire of a girl there how much the rooms cost. She sniffs at your attire but summons Mrs. Tindle, who has been expecting your arrival and informs you that a spare room in the attic has been set aside for you. "'Tis out of the way," She says and, checking that her serving girl's back is turned, winks discreetly at you: "Please take the servant entrance through the back, practically no-one will see you come or go that way."
You drop by the local pub, the Old Shuck, after this brief meeting. You find the place nearly empty except for the well-groomed Mr. Petty Crumblebuckie, who pretends not to know you, and the barkeep Dallin, who suggests you try again tonight for camping supplies. The pub should fill up by then, he reassures.
- Marigold Scroggins-For All:
- [9] You strut your stuff through the muddy street, casting a stylish eye here and there. Several fellows nod politely back (although your rugged appearance invites disdain from one rich older gentleman) and you find an aging servant who actually works for the Duchesne's. He gossips for some time about the recent murder. But the gist of it is that he misses his former master and dislikes the new Priest.
"He's an odd 'un, that Chizzleworth, always up late in the chapel out back of the Hall, studying his bloody (beggin' your pardon) Papist texts and other...Anyway I've got to be getting back to the Hall. It's a pleasure meeting you."

Re: Roll to Dodge!
- Spoiler:
- 'but lets you in after some banging'
Did I at least introduce myself to the poor lass first!
I leave the pub and head in the general direction of the Hall, but taking a slightly rambling winding course.
I am on the look out for any locals, especially those who look like they might work the land, farmers, farmhands, ploughmen, game keepers, that sort.
If I find any I will ask them about the upcoming frost to make idle chatter and get friendly, what the farming prospects are like, and then mention the gypsies and any news about going son up at the big Hall to see how they respond.

Re: Roll to Dodge!
Bloody hell do people just not read the rules or something?!
I mean all actions have been legitimate thus far, well done, but I even mentioned how if you don't know what the spoiler boxes are for you should go read the rules.
I added a rules section, with a map, to the original game description post. Everything you need is on page 15 and 16 of this thread.
Anyway, Petty is correct. The spoiler boxes are to simulate the fact that you are working alone throughout the day and to invoke a sense of mystery in the proceedings. You do not know what the other detectives are up to during the day, but any detectives staying at Mrs. Hindle's Inn will share what they have done throughout the day. (Basically this means that once a day ends and the detectives have returned home, you, the player, may then read through the spoiler boxes from the day.)

Well we do treat rules more as guidelines, or suggestions.
And not sure spoilers will entirely work anyway as Mrs Figg cant resist them, like a moth to the flame

Re: Roll to Dodge!
Resistance is futile with her sort!
I suppose I should have been a little more clear about the fact that I added a rules section. Except, oh yeah:
Anyway, at least we're now all on the same page, so to speak.

Re: Roll to Dodge!
Waiting on Mrs. Figg I do believe, but no rush!
I like the direction you're heading in Ringdrotten, but to be clear to everyone else (and I hope I put this in the game description on pg. 15) Tilda Hindle, the proprietress of the local inn, was informed of your arrival in-town and prepared a small garret (or proper bedroom, depending on your class) for each of you as well as a meeting room for your meals (which she will provide) and for discussing the days research and events.
Edit: Also don't worry Azriel about the money. The XX/XXs refers to X pounds and X shillings. It's really quite a lot of money for the time (a pint of beer would only be (maybe) about 2 pence). Obviously the police commissioner was expecting some heavy expenses as he doled out at least a few months wages to each of you for your detective money.

- Spoiler:
- I read all spoilers
- Spoiler:
- I find out from my sources that there is a secret tunnel leading from the pub to the hall, so I don a disguise and go to the cellar to find the entry. In the dark dank cobwebby cellar I find Petty slumped on the sawdust floor with an empty buckie barrel, he is gently snoring and letting off noxious gases, foolishly I light an oil lamp, the resulting explosion ''blows the bloody door off!''

Mrs. Figg- "I read all the spoilers"
No!
No no no! My gosh, the nerve of some!
The game isn't half as good if we don't observe the rules for the spoilers. Read your own only! Once your character becomes aware of what the other detectives are doing I will let you know by changing "____________ Only!" to "_________ For all" or something. This will happen once every three rounds (the end of every day).
(Also Mrs. Figg as amusing as such an explosion would be (involving Petty's obvious proclivity for drunken antics) you can't just write the game events out, especially those involving other people. The whole idea is that the players submit an action or idea or whatever and I determine how it goes and let them know. I do try to make things fun and interesting! I do!)

Re: Roll to Dodge!
Yeah sorry Petty you have no context for this discussion. You're like Donny from The Big Lebowski.
Anyway the point is that I wasn't considering putting in a secret tunnel from the Pub to Braxton Hall as it would be really, really weird for this setting. Like Doctor Who level-of-plot-convenience-weird. I'm going to steal that idea and put secret tunnels in somewhere now, but rather than me having to sort of brow-beat down your idea of the tunnel by (no matter what you get for the roll) telling you
One that is a suggestion for what you want your character to do; not a description of what your character is doing.
It's like a horse-before-the-cart problem. You guys tell me what you want to do, I tell you how it goes.
Anyway sorry for stickler-ing the rules, but there it is.
Goodluck all! Update forthcoming, hopefully!
