My MacBook Pro started beeping a few days ago. Took it to the nearest Apple store and it turns out it was because the RAM wasn't properly inserted. I've had this thing for almost three years and it's never happened before. The day before it started I don't remember jostling it or anything; just sort of arbitrarily got loose or something, I guess. Oh well, at least they didn't charge me for fixing it.

My MBP has been telling me to replace my battery "soon" for about a year now. Wish I could just do it myself without having to buy a cheap chinese knock off battery.

Good to know you can have that message for a year. I changed my battery last year because of that message; don't think it was for a year, though.

I can get about 4 hours on a charge. That's when I'm casually browsing online; if I'm going to stream video I need to plug it in, otherwise I'd get about 2 hours on a charge.

Seeing how I've had it for almost three years, and I bought it refurbished from Apple, I'd say it's taking all of this pretty well.

But I won't be laughing when I have to foot the bill for a new computer. And I'm NOT going back to Windows.

Computers are really very silly though.

I know. Along with my little compact camera this little computer is the best thing I ever bought.   

I like computers for the most part. And I've found that my Mac is much more reliable than my car. Cars fooking suck. You all who live in countries with better public transportation and where lots of things are within walking distance had better count your lucky stars.

Well, I don't own a car, have a unreliable laptop, a cheap mobile phone, and my digital camera seems to have broken.

I might as well go live in the forest as a hermit, technology seems to hate me...

I dont have a car either Malick, or in fact know how to drive, which what with all the buckie is probably for the best.
And my pc runs mainly on hope.

On the car end of the spectrum you're not missing out on much, just paying out the ass for gasoline!

how can you not know how to drive? you live in the middle of far far away from anything mountains and stuff.

cars are like mini black holes, they suck up cash on a never ending event horizon of misery.

You've seen the scenery all round me- I walk everywhere (ok stagger and weave everywhere). Walking a few miles to get somewhere is normal.

My old Toshiba laptop is still running strong after almost 13 years, but Windows XP is no longer supported as of this month, so I'm faced with upgrading my OS or leaving myself increasingly open to enterprising hackers from the developing world.   

Has anybody here got any experience playing with any of the Linux distros?

I recently switched back to Ubuntu after having been using Windows 7 (prior to that I was on an earlier version of Ubuntu for about two years).  I've had very good experiences with it, and it is extremely user-friendly.  The set-up process used to be a bit complicated, but even that has been simplified and streamlined in recent years.  I know some people who like other distros better, and Ubuntu is certainly a little on the basic side, but I think that makes it good as a starter for Linux.  Not to mention that, if you aren't doing lots of programming or stuff, it probably won't make much of a difference to you.

The only thing that might be an issue is that normally people download the OS file and burn it to a CD or a USB disc.  The size of the OS was about 700 MB a few years ago, but I'm not sure what it is now since I borrowed an already-burned disc this time.  The size might be an issue for your Internet connection.  The company that makes Ubuntu used to ship free CDs of the OS to anyone who asked, but I just checked and apparently they're now selling them.  The cost is less than 10 bucks, though, if my mental pounds-to-dollars conversion is correct. Updates to subsequent versions of Ubuntu are free to download, and the size of those files is considerably less.
