Here you go Figg- the top row of the toolbox explained so you can crop-

Top Row left to right-



Rectangle select tool- use this to select an area, if you want to crop the picture use this to select the area then go to image/crop to selection.
Ellipse select tool- same as above but different shape.
Free Select- same as above but for cropping round shapes rather than areas.
Fuzzy select- for edges.
Select by colour- does what it says

If you hover your mouse pointer over an icon a box will pop up giving you its name and a brief description of what it does.

the enbigger or ensmaller thingie is very annoying, in Photoshop you just click on go big or go small but this thing you have to go though a rigmarole and choose a percentage, its not easy.

Is it the cropped image you are tying to scale or the whole thing?

I am trying to crop the image. is this a trick question?   

Well if you are cropping it you should not need to scale it.

If however you have already cropped something- say someones head to stick on another picture, then you might need to scale the image you have cropped up or down to get it the right size.

If its the latter then you use 'scale layer' (under the 'layer' tab.)

If however you have simply cropped down an image and now want to make the whole thing bigger just use 'scale image', but if you scale the image larger than the canvas size you will lose stuff off the edges, if this happens just
use 'canvas size' under the image tab and put the new canvas size you need in there before scaling the image up.

that sounds just like ffyordlandian, I just want to make the image smaller.   

Scale image then under 'image' tab.

ermergerd still dont understand one thing.   why is it so complicated? in PShop you just drag the edges to the size you want then click ok. simple. cant be doing with faffing around.

Its not that complicated- I did it all in that vid in under 40seconds and most of that was leaving stuff up on screen long enough for you to see what I was doing!

I seem to remember dragging cutout images to resize them in gimp. Or maybe it was gimpshop, which is now unfortunately kaput.

Yeah, having to resize by going to a menu is kludgy.
