He'd have to trace that particular love affair clear back to it's origins in Bree, I believe. This thing's got legs, not like a random drunken encounter where everyone tries sheepishly to pretend nothing's happened afterwards, but with a lot of crabbit mixed in.

Re: Forumshire: The First Five Years
One of the stumbling blocks for the chapter on 2012 (when I was working on it several months ago) is that it by necessity deals with a lot of Bree issues which I am less familiar with. Since Bree has been down for a while now, I wasn't (and am still not) able to look through its archive for research, which means I would need to make the subsequent chapters a lot less detailed than the one on 2011. Which might happen anyway, since there were fewer events of high drama, but that just seems awfully anticlimactic.
The main reason, though, as mentioned before, is that some of the events from the last year or two (mainly the last year) are not distant enough for their significance in the broader context to become evident. One of my main goals in this project was to give meaning to the events that happened by placing them in a narrative, but as we get closer and closer to the present, conclusions about the narrative become less self-evident and there is a greater degree of judgement-making. While I am by necessity making up my own historiography here, I'd like to have solid, defensible reasons for the authorial decisions I make.

I'm glad to hear Odo still remembers the way of things around here.
Re: Forumshire: The First Five Years
Well I remember coming to Bree when news regarding the Hobbit was still mostly positive; there were some disturbed murmurings about the dwarves' appearance and the invention of a new female character Tauriel, but it was for the most part still positive. I remember reading some very lengthy arguments and debates about Lord of the Rings from Petty when I was still a lurker and I remember when the collective mood of the forum forever changed in April 2012 after Cinema-Con where Radagast was revealed, bunny sleigh and all.

Re: Forumshire: The First Five Years
That's a good point, RA. I recall the mood changing here on Forumshire as a result of CinemaCon, too. I thought it was really weird since we didn't even get to see anything, but I recall some long-time supporters of PJ saying stuff I never thought I'd hear from them. I think there was some wavering on here, at least, as some of the promotional material looked good to people, but the release of AUJ sealed the deal, I think. Interestingly, the release of DOS seems to have had a similar effect on many other forums, having departed too far from the book for most people's tastes. The level of criticism is not quite as severe as here or Bree, though.

I will see it on opening night, so I can get the temptation out of the way as soon as possible.
Since it's basically fan fiction I don't have an preconceived notions, I'm just eager to get this over with (I hope Thorin dies extremely brutally as well ) I am curious about Dain, The driving out of the Necromancer and possible 'bridging sequences' though.

Re: Forumshire: The First Five Years
I've been following these movies since 2008, so I'm definitely going to see it through to the end. It's a lot of fun to write a big crabbit review and to discuss it with others, too. Plus, after this, we might not have any more Middle-earth movies in our lifetimes. Who knows if any future ones would be good (and hell, they'll undoubtedly reboot it sooner or later), but since I was so young when LOTR came out this is my only chance to experience the release cycle for myself.
Re: Forumshire: The First Five Years
Yeah, no matter what I say or feel coming out at the end of BOTFA, at least a part of me will be a little sadder at the thought of this being the last foray to cinematic Middle Earth for the foreseeable future. It's going to feel odd, (not to mention kinda weird), until the EE/Ultimate shiny ultra extended with a Tv shirt Hobbit+LOTR and afterwards, we won't anything to focus our crabbit on.
(This is kinda sad) I grew up with the Harry Potter films, even though I wasn't a big fan of them (preferred the books) I was actually quite depressed for a week after DH2 came out, it was kinda like saying goodbye to my childhood,it just felt really weird to know that was it.

Re: Forumshire: The First Five Years
I remember finishing DH2 (the book) and feeling a kind of mourning for it. I know it sounds silly but I found the books incredibly involving, it felt like losing friends, I read them well into adulthood and I dont have that association with childhood, but they still captured my imagination in a profound way. Part of me still would love it if JKRowling wrote more Harry related stuff. I love the first 3 films, perfect casting and magical atmospheres, the next two were enjoyable but Yates ruined it for me. I groaned everytime I found out he was directing.
