I think there were a lot of good intentions behind Star Trek V. There's a lot of potential in the overall plot, it just could have been realized more. The focus on the relationship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is also a really nice touch.

I think the one thing V gets spot on in is that relationship between those three, all the films best scenes revolve around the three of them.
The novelization of the film is considerably better ironing out a lot of the problems and giving a decent backstory to the Klingon ship and its crew that makes a lot more sense of their actions, particularly the relationship between the Klingon captain and the female klingon officer.

Not exactly, more its just very underdeveloped in the film and a lot of it ended up on the cutting room floor, the novelisation just fills it all back in.

Yes well, that was in Generations, which has one or two minor plot holes....

I forgive Generations many things because they filmed with Lady Washington and the cast and crew introduced our crew to such songs as:

There once was a man no bigger than your hand,
And he talked through his little asshole!
Asshole asshole asshole asshooooole!
He talked through his little asshole!

Edit: the tune to this song could be hummed or whistled quietly to great effect as certain people were talking. Quite valuable really.Very Happy

So actors know ruder shanties than sailors?! Shocked

I was once taught a song by a salty type about a young lady who lived in a lighthouse, she had hairs on her dicky-di-do that went down to her knees. No

Worth a watch this- first episode in a professional fan made series that continues on directly from where TOS finished (3 years into the 5 year mission)- looks perfect, takes a bit of time to get used to new actors in the role, but it feels like the original in almost every way except the absent of the original actors.

They have a Kickstarter to make the rest of the series and are looking for 100,000, so far they have got 71,000 with 13 days to go.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/125377036/star-trek-continues-webseries/

I hope they get the money, I'd enjoy seeing this continue. It washes away the bad taste left by the JJ films.

Hmmm. I never like other people playing a character. Ruins the whatever it is that makes you buy in to a character. Both superficially and also the way in which the character is played. Everyone after the original is trying to fill some boots because we have all seen the original and know the character.

Why cant they just do something new?

A good question Lance- but have you given the episode a go?
I think its quite possible for some characters to be played by different actors- no one complains that when Patrick Stewart plays Macbeth that he is not as good as Burbage (Shakespeares lead actor)

Yes, but that is literature that has been around for a very long time, before global superstars that everyone knows. Will Shatner is Kirk. Macbeth is whoever plays him at the time.

I think certain people play a character, some make a character.

I dont know, I would have been happy with Karl Urban as McCoy (with a proper ST script obviously) even though I think DeForest Kelley defined the role.

There are plenty stuff like that- Ian McKellan is an excellent Gandalf, but so was Sir Michael Horden.
I loved Sean Connery as Bond, but plenty of others have played the role.

Kirk, Spock and McCoy are good characters that are strong enough in that setting I think to be explored by other performers without losing the characters.

I did not expect to enjoy the above episode, and was pretty damn sceptical of the whole concept (Nagual has just informed me I 'screwed my face up like someone has dropped a couple of sour vinegar drops in my mouth, when he told me about it Mad  ) but having watched it I cant say anything other than it was almost exactly like seeing a classic series episode I had somehow missed.

Having seen "Pilgrim of Eternity", and every other fan-made production out there, I have to say that I am pleased with everyone's enthusiasm for STOS, however, sometimes it just comes off as oh, too cheeseball or too, uh, hokey. Granted, STOS itself was cheesy in the highest sense of the genre, but oh, I can laugh at the fan-made stuff and well, just grin at it. They did have some bits (especially when the guest stars sparkle in their performances) where I was entranced, but it's always eclipsed by a sub-standard performance from a non-professional actor. Alas.

As for the new Trek films from Hollywood: I adore them. I never thought that I could accept other actors portraying my favorite gang, but there it is, I am absorbed, distracted, and engaged by their performances in every conceivable way. My only gripe is that I think Chris Helmsworth should have been Kirk, and that Chris Pine is a little too gritty, too flea-ish, too -- oh - annoying to be Kirk. I have to assure myself that this is the effect of the Time Rift, and that had this Kirk had his original up-bringing, he would have been a much more noble character.

Cumberbach blew me away. I screamed with delight when his smile turned into a "V", reminiscent of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, "Shall we...begin?!" AUUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!
The delightful pain he inflicted as a "bad guy" was so wonderful..what else can one say, other than "I need more Sherlock, NOW".
