Halfy I find that, well different- here parliament makes laws police enforce the laws of the land- they dont get to pick which bits they enforce that seems like a recipe for chaos.

County Sheriffs are elected officials, usually with a 4 year term. They have as much freedom to express their opinions about good and bad laws as any other politician.

Right now every sheriff in Colorado will be trying to figure out the balance between what the people of their county want, what the State wants, what the courts want, and what they can afford within the budget they've been given.

In that political context, I'd take his statement as testing the waters.

The majority of hot button issues are inconsequential. (others will lead to civil war). Given the number of guns already out there that will be grandfathered in, the ban will not have much of an effect. Only once the whole country is moving the same direction will such laws have an effect. I think we may get there on background checks for ALL transactions, which will eventually lead to registration, and finally perhaps some method of assault weapon control. But that's decades away. Right now I'd be upset by a sheriff that refuses to enforce background checks, but will give a pass on specific weapons ban until the country is ready for it.

Tomahawk missiles on the other hand....

I had forgotten Americans elect their police- cant say as I am entirely sold on that- seems to bring politics to directly into it- surely there is a risk in different counties of law being enforced base don special intrests and whoever shouts loudest- if the US is anything like here then those least likely to vote are the poorest, those most likely effected by law enforcment.

I have to say not having any background checks at the moment seems like complete madness form the outside looking in- the BBC Panorama current affairs show did a prog on Americas love of the gun- and the reporter went to a gun fair, bough the same weapon used in the recent massacres- and all she needed as a 'check' to buy it was a valid US driving licence.
She could have walked straight out the gun fair straight to the local cinema and opened fire- there was certainly no way for those who made the sale to know her intentions or state of mind- they simply didnt seem interested.
