I'm trying to work it out. Perhaps they mean "Freedom with responsibility." And making money is responsible, if you want to survive in America that is. After all, it's the Land of the Free to die a miserly death if you're poor, or a minority. And, let's face it, you almost always need to break a few eggs in the process.

So what you are saying is that freedom of speech is only available to those with a large enough bank balance?

Yeah, that makes sense of quite a lot of America actually.

I think the American Civil Liberties Union should get involved. I can sort of see her being asked to leave the cheerleading squad (though still horrid), but being expelled is nauseating. But then, that's Texas. Grew up there. Left as soon as I could.

Um is that not why you have a police forc and an army? I think some parts of the US still think its 1880!

Wait, do you really believe that most of America has police forces???

Police departments exist in cities and in most towns. They're funded by the residents of those cities and they normally have no authority outside the city limits.

But in the rural areas the communities are expected to self-police with oversight from the County Sheriff's department. The Sheriff is elected from among the citizens, and law enforcement training is desirable but not necessary. For enforcement, deputies are provided as funds are available.

In our county of over 1200 square miles there are only a couple part time deputies to provide actual enforcement. To quote from our county website: "The Sheriff's Office utilizes a reserve deputy program to better assist the Office in delivering the best possible service to the public." In large states like Alaska and Texas the areas can be much greater.

We also have volunteer fire departments. That's just the way it is for most of rural America. It's not 1780's, or 1880's, or 1980's. It's just the way things are, and there's no need to be condescending towards us.

Ok so lets get this straight. Your government doesnt provide free health care for life. It doesnt provide policing to protect its citizens either. It doesnt give you free education to as high a level as you are capable of attaining.
It doesnt provide and guarantee high quality drinking water.
It doesnt provide you with help to pay your rent if you fall on hard times and it doesnt offer you benefits and retraining until you can get work again.

So what exactly is it Americans pay their politicans to actually do for them?

I've been pondering on that one myself for quite a few years. I still haven't figured out if they understand they're supposed to be doing things for us instead of to us.

The Cohen brothers seem to understand rural American law enforcement. Fargo and No Country for Old Men both seem far more realistic to me than any CSI show. Winter's Bone was really good too.

Maybe creating a proper tax payer funded police force in each state that covers everyone and can react and protect its citizens might be a good first step to helping convince people they shouldnt need to carry a deadly weapon to feel safe in the first place.
I can kind of see why folks would be reluctant to give up their guns if there isnt even a decent police force to take over protecting people.

I loved Fargo- still, to my shame, not got round to seeing No Country for Old Men.

Not to mention federal level law enforcement.

Edit: I should note that a significant majority of people in the United States live in urban or suburban areas which are served by local, taxpayer-funded police departments which tend to be quite large. The needs and logistics of rural areas are different which is why they often have different systems.

So why does there seem to be a constent repitition in the gun debate that the police coverage for rural areas is poor and ineffectual?
