He was played by Ricardo Montalbán- who is actually mexican- but the charcater Khan is supposed to be Indian.
This is the story of Khan as it played out in the original tv show and the film Wrath of Khan- Ive put it in spoilers just in case, but I doubt very much beyond the name and some sort of genetic manupaliton will survive into the new version.
