I've often wondered about Smeagol before the Ring. It doesnt seem an entirly happy childhood and he never seems to have been a particularly pleasant person before that- possibly as a result of his 'grandma'.
But there are glimspses of things he misses, sun on the daises ect and in TTT when he speaks of listening to tales out of the south in his childhood and other tiny snapshots of his life before that seems like pleasant memories.
Its such a shame PJ left most of them out his dialogue really as they make him all the sadder, more pitable and moe relatable.

BTW, was that picture of Martin Freeman cleverly blended with Elijah Wood? Maybe EW just walks around naturally looking air-brushed and that's what I'm seeing.

I've always siad that Gollum's the most Damaged 'Victim' of the ring in the whole Story. Tolkien gives Gandy the point to make on how well Bilbo survived in the Years he owned the damn thing, and how easily, at the end of the day, he gave it up.I can Totally understand Smeagols wish for revenge on those that had abused him, and TBH, the only really 'Bad' thing he did was Kill Deagol FOR the ring, beause his already Damaged mind was much more receptive to the Rings evil... They often say that the people who Abuse most easily, are they themselves victims of Abuse. even in the real world. And what's the thing you want to do if you feel you've been wronged ? Kick Back. This little bit of this thread's a case in point, isn't it ?

Well, Gollum did do a lot of awful awful things. It is mentioned (in LOTR) that he stole babies from their cradles and ate them. Not just orcs and fish.

But I do agree with the rest.

Thats true Amarie, he was 'rumoured' to steal babies from cradles- but that was after he had left Mountains in pursuit of the Ring.
I think Smeagol before the Ring was probably an unpleaant sort and untrustworthy. I also supsect he was not that bright, his thinking ven then, using the idea it was his birthday as justification for murder is quite simplisitic. A more intelligent mind would need more a convulted way of convincing themselves they were in the right I think.
Thast not to say he was stupid, I think he was always cunning in his own way.
When he got the Ring Gandalf says he used it to 'find out secrets'- so presumably at first he tried to be cunning with it, but he wasnt bright enough to make use of the secrets he was learning as instead of elevating himself he was shunned and kicked when visible.
