{{ Indeed, so it seems after a quick nosey myself- no reference to pipe smoking at Bombadils either or even Bree.
Which all in all is rather interesting, as it's highly unlikely the hobbits went without a smoke for so long. I suspect Tolkien assumed smoking and didn't feel the need to mention it every time- such as when Gandalf first returns to Bag End and he and Frodo sit far up into the night talking. I think Tolkien was just presuming a drink or two and a pipe as part and parcel of doing so. On other occasions such as Shadow of the Past he does note Gandalf is smoking, so one can assume on that occasion Frodo wasn't as smoking is explicitly mentioned, but only in relation to Gandalf.}}

Frodo simply isn't the smoking type. That requires a willingness to do something idly, and Frodo's a purposeful sort, even if it involves rumination. Sam on the other hand I'd see as a smoker, though he's never mentioned as doing it.
