They became kids again and full of innocent enjoyment. yep the costumes, sets and acting is clunky, but there's something else that you cant manufacture with slick cgi and post-post-modern sensibilities. Charm.

I cant drive, I know fook all about cars yet I love Top Gear ! Biggest mistake but, after the storm has broke, it was only a matter of (short) time before something happened with the program. I love the fluid bond those guys have got

{{Dunno if any of you soft southern sassenach puddings, sorry, um I meant good English folk, have seen Still Game (I think the new series currently on is for the first time being broadcast south of the border at the same time as here).
For those who don't know it follows the exploits of two pensioners in a Glasgow towerblock and their little community of friends. Its a sitcom, but Scottish.

Anyhow the reason for this post is that after a long and successful run on Scottish tv they stopped making it, not due to any lack of demand for more but because the two leads, and also they write it, fell out.

The current series marks there return to the small screen after many years absence.
But before it returned to tv they got together and brought it back first on stage- at the Glasgow Hydro (usually a venue for big pop concerts)- and here it is. Enjoy   }}}

Ive seen this advertised but not got round to watching it yet.

Give it a go Azriel- although the stage play is written for fans there not a lot to get to grips with so it shouldnt be offputting- you've Jack and Victor- two best friends who grew up together and grew old together after they were both widowed.

(The tv series intro shows this well)



They live in a Glasgow block of flats in an area of the city called called Craiglang (fictional but based on Mary Hill). And most of it set in the flats or at the local pub The Clansmen, which is run by Boaby- all you need to know about Boaby is that he's a wanker.
Their circle of friends includes Isa, who lives on the same landing as them and works at the local corner shop as a cleaner and is the worst gossip and curtain twitcher ever.
Then there is Winston, who has only one leg.
Tam who is a tight-fisted old bastard.
And Naveed who runs the local cornershop (and whose wife you never see but hear a lot).

And thats pretty much all you need to know I think.   }}}

Unfortunately the drama is shite. its like watching a Da vinci's Demons lite. they actually...fookadilly!... had the actor who played Rob Stark... wait for it!.. as a guy who is marrying the daughter of the actor who played Walder Frey...like in a marriage scene!..

I'm also quite happy that the Top Gear guys are continuing the show in a new incarnation. It was too bad when the show was cancelled!

Nan is my least favourite character of Catherine Tate.

She is like an amalgamation of all the worst traits in a bunch of old folk Ive met in my life but she has this wonderfully lively spirit too- the young person stuck in an aged body wondering what the fuck happened and determined to fight it anyway- also something of the best I see in old folk. And some of what she says could come out of the mouths of folk I know or have known, so that always cracks me up. But for me its comedy yes, but its also more honest than 90% of the portrayals of women of that age on TV. It feels to me like its in a long line of northern writers portrayal and affection for the elderly woman in their communities, yes its cruder than in the past but its the same sentiments behind say Alan Bennets work to my mind}}}

I happen to think being old doesn't excuse being rude and horrible. its like being old is a get out clause.

{{{{ I think you have it arse to elbow there Figg. Think of all the people you have known so far in your life who are not old. I bet quite a few of them were unpleasant, arseholes, bitches, bastards, cocks and wankers- in other-words a normal mix of people you might meet in your life. They don't suddenly get cuddly and nice just got they got old- no they are still unpleasant wankers as old people too.
Folk seem to forget this. Old people are not some special class of people that are just there, born old,they are just people who haven't died yet. And that means they are just like everyone else.
In the care business, though you will never know it, by sheer probability some of the folk you care for and look after will have been wife/husband-beaters, racists, alcoholics, drug users, violent abusers, bullies all the way up potentially to pedophiles and even murderers that were never caught ect
And often they arent hard to spot as if they haven't got a dementia of some sort they will still be unpleasant arses in old age.
Nan aint that bad but she is a comic character where the comedy lies in her many faults as a person- that you see those faults of a person in an old person, a seeming loveable granny guise, is where the humour lies. But it relies on that weird notion society has at large that old folk are all the same-nice and loveable and full of wisdom.
Nan being none of those things is the comedy (and is also Tates social commentary on how we see the elderly). }}}

I think you have it ''arse to elbow'' I think most people know that old people can be cantankerous rude old bats, its the TV that insists on making oldies look like Father Christmas, therefore if we know its a construct and the reality is wildly different, why do people laugh? they laugh because old people are generally allowed to be rude as they like without consequences, which is what we all would like to feel, so I think its more about society wanting to be gruesome farts without the punch in the face finale.

{{I dont. Yes if you ask people on an intellectual level 'do you kn ow old people are just young people who have been about a bit and just as varied?' they say yes- but in my experience its not how folk act around them, at all. And I include many people who work with the elderly on a daily basis.
I think the problem lies in the fact we call them something- the elderly, as I just did, or residents, old folk, retirees, pensioners, whatever the label- it neatly separates them off, because if we actually, seriously believed they were people we would never treat them as we do. }}

sometimes you need to label people and separate them off, like you need to with children and not treat them like adults, but you still shouldn't allow bad behaviour or encourage it no matter what age people are. whether its kids tantrums or pensioners mouthing off about immigrants, and generally being obnoxious. its not ok whether you are 8 or 80.

I agree that rudeness at any age is not acceptable at all. I have no respect for anyone who is rude & I don't allow it to pass by just cuz its a child or an oldie, in fact oldies should respect younger people also or younger people wont learn that being nice is better than being rude. Children are learning but oldies set the bar on this.
