That's a great version of the song. I hadn't heard it before.  John Brown's Body/The Battle Hymn of the Republic really sparked my interest in hymns and that sort of music, and rekindled my interest in folk music in general.  I also find it interesting that, for a song as fundamentally religious as this one, it was progressive almost to the point of radicalism for its time.  Goes to show that the relationship between religion and politics was not always as one-sided as it is now. :/

It's interesting, I only knew the first verse of the song:

"John Brown's Body lies a'mouldering in the grave...
... Glory, glory Hallelujah!..."

and always thought it was an anti-John Brown song which the Union turned on it's head. It's interesting to know the real truth of the song.   

John Brown fascinates me as one of the most compelling characters in American history, but I can't say I'm exactly a fan. Killed some innocent people trying to foment rebellion in the territories before his raid on Harper's Ferry. He had a large influence on Frederick Douglas, who was smart enough to walk away when he saw a suicide mission in the making.

The music of Charles Ives really got me interested in hymns and patriotic tunes.
