I looked this lutefisk up, the description contained sevral phrases Id not normally look for in food-

'It is made from aged stockfish'   

'It is gelatinous in texture' (meat of any sort should never be gelatinous   )

'and has an extremely strong, pungent odour'-

Lutefisk seems to be the equivalent of fruitcake, which is often proudly presented, nicely wrapped, upon entering the threshold of a guest's house. It is then thrown in a bin with all the other fruitcake, and since it seems indestructible, often regifted.

I've never understood why people eat it. Most don't like it, but for some reason you should like it. It's like sushi, only rotten. Things you can't eat without getting hammered on aquavit I usually pass on

Well, firstly it's not very pungnant and secondly it's not rotten. Quite the opposite actually as it's been treated with ... lye (?) which kills any bacteria that might rot it.

It's basically an old method of perserving the fish which has survired as a christmas tradition.

I wouldn't say I'm a big fan, but with the right acompagniment in food, beverages, øl og akevitt, and people I guess it can be quite enjoyable.  

its probably a Viking host/guest thing, when you are a guest if you refuse it you get taken out into the snow with your pants round your ankles and you get beaten with the fisk and then you have to eat it

Rotten or not, I just don't see the point in eating something that tastes bad nothing at best and requires lots of side dishes and drink to be edible at all. I'd rather eat something that actually tastes well

Yes well maybe in the southern bits of Fjordianland where the Pink Parades and happy gay dancing take place, and where Ringo's Liberation Army is you don't, but I fancy in Norc's bit of the land their fisk is more hard core (and raw and smelly!)

I do love the view people around here have gotten of Tromsø. It has kind of taken the appearance of a wild frontier town. Still with sliding busses, tons of snow and reindeer in the garden I guess people can be excused for taking that view.    

What was it Halfwise called it... "An iceblock with a few reindeer sticking out of it."

As for the fish I don't think we eat raw fish anywhere in Norway. Not even up north.    Tørrfisk, lutefisk, rakfisk, klippfisk or røkelaks, it's all preserved in some sort of of way.   

Not that I have anything against raw fish, good sushi can be great.  

They fight trolls up there and lets not forget the ever present threat from Jævla Stor Fisk - we know how hardy those north Fjoirdans are, you cant fool us into taking our eye off them again or they'd back over in a horde before you could say viking raid!
