Poor Petty.  Crying or Very sad I nearly played trombone in school. Opted for a study hall instead (I had been taking piano lessons for a while at this point (6th grade)).

Have really gotten into music a lot more lately.

Love Barenaked Ladies, favorite band of all time.
Gotten into Green Day, Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas (lead singer Matchbox Twenty), Fall Out Boy, Steven Page (Former co lead singer of Barenaked Ladies), Ben Folds Five, and Guster quite a bit as well.

Some of BNL's more recent work for those of you who only know them for their late 90s and early 2000s work.

'I Have Learned' from 2010 album 'All in Good Time'

'Odds Are' from 2013 album 'Grinning Streak', pretty hilarious video as well, must watch several times to catch everything.

Green Day: 'X-Kid' from 2012 album 'Tre!'

Matchbox Twenty 'How Far We've Come' from 2007 Greates hits album 'Exile on Mainstream' and 'She's So Mean' from 2012 album 'North'

So on the day of the concert they announced to the audience before the first half began that they would switch the order as shown in the program: first they'd perform Stravinsky, then Machaut.  The critic showed up during the intermission and sat enraptured during the second half (being Machaut), and left gushing about "that amazing Stravinsky, always looking for new sounds and textures!"

I've never heard that story, but it does sound like something a music critic would fall for. Laughing

Well, most music criticism consists of people who can't write writing about people who can't talk for people who can't read. To paraphrase Frank Zappa.  Razz

I have been a bit lazy on the music front for a while. Waiting for Slash to release his new album toward the end of the year. Sure there must be more out there that I am just out of touch with these days.

I do indeed find it fascinating. I find it fascinating she thinks this is feminism- I find it fascinating many other women support her in this view. I find it fascinating older feminists in particular get so huffy about it. I find it fascinating women can have such a divergent view of what feminism is and in how they reflect and display that feminism. I find it all fascinating. And as man not a little bit confusing.

I need clarification on that Figg as I really dont see how me being confused by such divergent forms of self proclaimed feminism is me being judgemental- I have made no judgements at all, if I was making judgements I wouldn't be confused I would be certain in my judgement. Nor do I see how it is passive aggressive unless you consider the notion of a man even discussing what modern feminism is at all somehow not allowed.

Try this for a definition Petty:
Feminism is the spirit of solidarity whereby women support each other even if they don't agree on everything.
Especially if they don't agree on everything!

It's like the definition of Scotsman you've put forward. Despite what some people may claim, it's not absolutely necessary to have a family history that goes back 1000 years, or to wear kilts, or to drink [  ] whiskey and eat [  ] porridge, or to support independence, though you can find two Scotsmen who can fight to the death about any of those issues. In some ways the diversity almost is the defining quality!

Feminism is like that over here.

That seems the most likely thing to me too Dave, as contradictory as the different versions seem to be- some women see it as exploitation of a womans body for profit and others see it as a womens right to do what the hell she wants with her body including displaying it a sexual manner for profit.
Im quite sure there are plenty porn stars would claim to be as strong feminists as a Germaine Greer would. Even though Germaine Greer often speaks out about the modern sexploitation of women in music and pornography (she recently said the internet was the worst thing to ever happen to feminism) what I dont understand is why even trying to discuss the topic immediately brings accusations of making judgements and passive aggression.

Not so sure about the solidarity bit though- one type of feminist seems to attack other types pretty strongly and vocally (as in the Greer example)

I think it's the solidarity, Petty. Even when there's a strong disagreement on a particular issue, in this case the role of sexuality, there's an even stronger feeling that this needs to be an internal discussion, not something we let ourselves get divided over. Your role here is naturally suspect, as you've never paid your feminist dues. You're more like the English MP asking "Why can't the Scots agree on anything?"

So I have to be a woman to have an opinion or even questions about feminism?- I dont see how feminism can achieve any goals if it excludes form the conversation half the planets population.

Not what I said Petty. You're welcome to your opinions, and to ask your questions, but if they seem to be divisive of the larger group, questions like "Who's right, the sexually liberated or the anti sexual exploitation camp?" then you'll be perceived as anti-feminist. Just as if you were asking questions like "How can we raise awareness of both these issues, and get more people involved?" you'd be perceived as pro-feminist by many.
