The Japanese holdouts are a fascinating story. Onoda actually wrote a book about the subject years later.

I find the Onada story somehow strangely reminiscent of Doctor Strangelove. Soldiers fighting their own war and all that.
All very interesting.
All very interesting.

Yeah, it is.
And what I love about it is that opposed to most black and white films that are mostly different shades of grey, it's pitch black.
Oh, and Peter Sellers. Need I say more.

Re: Just...................whatever [3]
Yes, do share.
But these things can have psychological ramifications. In college I had a mad hopeless crush on an art/theatre major with the improbable name of Arabella Holzbog. Spent entire lunches halfway across the cafeteria at strategic angles gazing at her with puppy eyes over the shoulders of friends. She was remarkably sweet to me, letting me visit her dorm room and such, even after shooting me down when I finally screwed up the courage to make my move.
Years later her improbable name came in useful, for she is eminently googleable. I have followed her career with interest. She became a sort of C actress playing bit parts in B movies, though she did make it into the remake of the Bad News Bears and also Across the Universe. One of her major parts was in the straight to video Carnosaur 2.
I eagerly rented it, the first of her movies I found. Only to discover that about 45 minutes in, I had to watch as my crush, my all consuming love, my dream girl....I had to watch her guts get ripped out by a baby Tyranosaur. She uh, she didn't make it.
It's fair to say I was traumatized.
So dear Figgy, before you post any clips, please do let us know if you have a happy ending, hmm?

Great drawing, Lance! I used to collect model ships and they were mostly sailing ones like that.

Re: Just...................whatever [3]
Nice job! You got the relative proportions of of the sails right, including the split topsails, which many don't. The key structural lines, shrouds and stays and such, are there, and most of the sheets and braces make sense.
Since it's a good enough sketch to warrant it, I've got a criticism. My one quibble it that it appears that the staysails and mizzen spanker are filling from a port breeze, while all the squaresails are clearly filling from starboard. That's a head-scratcher in maritime art, like when shadows go in two different directions.
Since you clearly drew the hull healing to starboard, all the squaresails should naturally all be aback against the rig, a very bad situation, especially with that much sail set.

yep that what I was thinking too. But what Dave missed (and its easy for amatewers to do) is that you seem to have all the ships parrots sleeping on the starboard side thus making the wee ship keel over a bit in a sou'ester.
