Everytime Kate is mentioned, I start to hum this song. We used to sing it back in the days when I was in a tensing teen choir thingie when we were warming up.

On your computer, all of your files will be of a certain type. You can normally tell by the extension on the end of the file name or when you go in to the properties (by right clicking on the file ad selecting properties).

The extension basically tells your computer what type of file it is and therefore what software it needs to do something with it. For example, Accounts.xls would be a file opened in Microsoft excel (.xls is the extension) or pettysarse.jpg would be telling thing computer it is a picture of some kind (.jpg being a type of picture file).

For a video, there are a number of different files, e.g. .wmv or .m4v and so on.

If you have any videos on your computer, just click on them and select properties an you will be able to see.

If you have one of those kinds of videos, chances are you can upload it somewhere. Only thing to bear in mind is that some pain in the arse companies (coughapplecough) like to make everything theirs and so have their own file extensions that only work with apple products like Quicktime.

When you record on to a camera, one of those kinds of video files will be created on your cameras memory. Just needs to be transferred to your computer and then uploaded.

If you want to be clever, you can put them in to some other software and create a movie. If you look at mine, I have a video recorded, the sound of me playing, the original track I am playing to and some unprofessional looking text as well as transitions between certain bits (i.e. fade to video and fade to black at the end).

Really not that hard once you get used to it. I learnt by just going on to some software and playing about with it.

To translate for you Mrs Figg- ignore paragraph 2 (accurate and useful but I suspect so much gibberish in your ear Mrs Figg).

"For a video, there are a number of different files, e.g. .wmv or .m4v and so on."

Just think of it as VHS and betamax- there are different types. Most of them however you can play in any 'machine' so in practise you dont really have to worry about it.

If you have a camera that can record video as well as take pictures then your camera will most likely have a slot on the side somwhere for a usb cable- so you can plug it in to your computer to get at the pics and vids.

But thats getting ahead.
Stage 1 is to see if you can record with your camera, assuming you have a camera. If you do tell me what type of camera and I should be able to find the user manual online and go through how to take a video step by step.

no I can't record with my camera. I have only ever filmed with Super 8 before. You edited by cutting it up into bits and sticking it back together with cellotape stuff, and then projecting it onto a wall. I have also edited video with a SpeedRazor machine thing which was the size of a garden shed. thats my lot. end of knowledge. The 21st century is a complete mystery.

Figgs.... I spent a lot of brain power coming up with that. I know you know more than you are letting on and I wonder if you are now seeking attention.

Hmm? HMM?

Right... now we have gotten around that and you do could actually follow what I was on about, I think we maybe need to work out what software you may have to allow the 'spy hole' aka webcam, to work.

Do you know what model your computer/laptop is?

Yes I can back up Mrs Figg inability to grasp technologue unless explained in pre1980's metaphors. I still have the punch marks inside my barrel wall from when I got crabbit about explaning it. Mad

(But she did get there in the end)
