Re: Doctor Who [5]
What browser are you using David?
If you use mozilla firefox you can get a video plug in for it from their addons page- that will let you download embedded vid like youtube vids- wont be any faster but you can just leave it downloading slowly in the background until its finished.
Halfwise I meant to aks when you commented on the Bells episode- have you seen all series 5,6 and 7b then?
If so you are being (probably sensibly) quiet on the Amy debate!

Re: Doctor Who [5]
I'm using Firefox, but I can't keep a phone connection for more than 5 or 10 minutes during the day. At night I might be able to get an hour of continuous connection if I'm lucky. That hour of translates to about 3 minutes of download from Youtube. That's why I drive to an open wifi when I need to dowload.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
Ah- not sure if the built in addon will auto reconnect and continue downloading or not after a disconnect- if it does though might be worth a look.
Maybe try 'download helper' plug in and see what happens- assuming you can download the plug in!

Re: Doctor Who [5]
As you seem to like tech stuff David heres an explantion of how the TARDIS gets power.
One of the Hearts of a TARDIS (like Time Lords a TARDIS has two) is a massive energy collector that is a mathematically constructed copy of the Prime Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey. In modern times it is often referred to as an Eye of Harmony (which can cause some confusion). These Eye copies can be found on all TARDISes after the Type 24. The Eye's iron-like Containment Sphere is located beneath the Cloister Room. While the Prime Eye's Containment Sphere is 10 km in diameter the TARDIS's sphere only about the size of a house.
Artron Energy created by the Prime Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey is broadcast into the Space-Time Vortex. This energy travels though the Vortex's Time Contours. Attached to a TARDIS's Containment Sphere is the Receptor Antenna, which collects artron energy using chronon transduction. The naked singularity at the Heart of a TARDIS is directly linked to the Space-Time Vortex, and uses Chronon Transduction to collect the energy.
This creates a link between a TARDIS's Eye and the Prime Eye on Gallifrey. The TARDIS's Heart then emits the beams of Artron Energy to power a TARDIS. The Eye is equipped with a Flux Comparator to ensure a steady flow of energy. The Eye also serves to slowly vent the potential energy stored from dematerialization. This Hawking Radiation is leaked from the Eye's event horizon. As long as the Prime Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey remains in existence, a TARDIS's energy source will never stop producing power.
The closer one gets to the Heart of the TARDIS, the stronger the dimensional "pressure" gets. This "pressure" can have minor effects on the nervous system. If someone were to actually look directly into the Heart, while it was transducting energy from the Prime Eye of Gallifrey, their consciousness would be destroyed by the intense blasts of Artron Energy, leaving only a mindless body behind. Like the other Heart of the TARDIS, the Main Space-Time Element the Eye can, under the right circumstances, restore the dead back to life. For more information see the entry on the Main Space-Time Element.
When a TARDIS is de-registered and made non-operational, the Eye is opened for a short time to de-energize it. Once de-energized, a TARDIS can only be reactivated using special Gallifreyan technology. A drained TARDIS can be "jump started" by inserting a charged Neutron Rod into the receptor socket on the Console. A Time Ring's power source can also be used. Whatever the source, the power reading must be well above .2 omegas for a TARDIS to be energized.
The Eye is protected from unauthorized tampering by a retina print lock that only allows Time Lords to open the Eye. This lock can only be changed by altering the Security Matrix on Gallifrey. If the Eye is opened outside of a Dry Dimension Dockyard, it will cut off the flow of Artron energy to the Dynamorphic Generators. Having the Eye of Harmony open alters the molecular structure of any nearby planets. The TARDIS will attempt to contain the Eye's energies but if it is left open, the containment fields will drain all of the Auxiliary Power within three hours. At the end of this time any nearby planets will be destroyed in a massive burst of Gravitational Energy. If the Eye is left open for too long the TARDIS will die. Stasis Halos (similar to the Sash of Rassilon) should be used by the operator whenever working with an open Eye.
There is a switch labeled "Do not push" that will collapse an entire TARDIS into the Eye of Harmony. A Time Lord who is very close to their TARDIS can probably send telepathic messages to cause its Eye of Harmony to detonate in a massive explosion that would destroy everything for miles. A TARDIS being destroyed in the Vortex might buckle causality in the Web of Time for centuries in either direction, and with the right technical knowledge and temporal abilities it would be possible to sabotage a TARDIS so that it would destroy the entire Universe.
Since the Heart of the TARDIS is a copy of the Eye of Harmony, it can also serve as an temporary independent power source if the Prime Eye of Harmony is out of range (see Noosphere Parameters) or has been disabled. However the fuel supply of this Copy Eye is not unlimited. Given that the iron sphere that holds the Prime Eye is about 70 million times as big as the one holding a TARDIS's Eye it is possible that the Heart of a TARDIS has only 1/70,000,000 the fuel capacity of the Prime Eye. A fully fueled TARDIS can travel at least 200 trillion years without completely exhausting the fuel supply. In any case, it appears that the Copy Eye is capable of supply independent power for at least a few years.
Without the Prime Eye of Harmony a TARDIS would eventually have to refuel itself. Fortunately the Eye's Receptor Antenna is also capable of collecting temporal energy from temporal instabilities, fault-lines running between dimensions, scars on reality, or rifts in time and space that found throughout this Universe. Time Rifts make the best fuel source. Such a rift occurs when two or more dimensions are pressed against each other creating a rift or a scar like an earthquake fault line. The TARDIS can drain off the energy created by the competing forces. Depending on the current energy level of the rift it can take a few minutes to a few days for the TARDIS to power up completely. The energy collected by the copy Eye is stored it in the TARDIS's other Heart (aka Main Space-Time Element) located in the Console. A TARDIS's Emergency Procedures will automatically try to divert any large explosion or energy release that occurs inside the TARDIS into its Eye of Harmony. It should be noted that fuel collected in this Universe can only be used in this Universe. Should a TARDIS that relies on scavenged fuel travel into a parallel universe it would be without power unless a source of Gallifreyan energy or a local temporal anomaly could be found. If any of the TARDIS's small Power Cells retain power, they can be charged up if the operator donates a dose of artron energy equivalent to 10 years of their life. Once the cell has finished its recharging cycle (about 24 hours) and powered back up, it can be used to give the TARDIS five minutes to attempt a space-time jump.
Should power from the TARDIS's Heart be unavailable, the TARDIS will have to rely on the Ancillary Power Station for emergency energy.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
I just watched The Girl who Waited. This time Amy gets killed and Rory tears his hair out, rather than the other way around. I thought it was well done and well acted, but it's like the writers have a bet to see how many permutations of this same scene they can get away with. It's beginning to get a "He's DEAD Jim!!!" quality to it.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
Slightly unfortunately David, becuase of all the episodes you are missing the effect is probably more prominent than when watching these episodes weeks, months or even a year apart.

For my money Gatiss' best Who episode was his first - The Unquiet Dead.
Gatiss you see belongs in Victorian England- its a period he loves, from its griminess to his taste in gothic horror and Gatiss best work, Unquiet Dead, League of Gentlemen and Sherlock all have roots in Victorian times.
And Crimson Horror sees Gatiss combining all his loves- Victroian time period, gothic horror, a dark streak of humour and the north of England.
But does it work?
Strax- "We are going, to the North."
Well for the first fifteen odd minutes what we have is an episode of the Doctors gang- Madame Vashtra, Jenny and Strax investigating mysterious deaths in Victroinan Yorkshire. Thats fifteen whole minutes, or one third of an episode with no Doctor and no Clara.
In past series of NuWho it has been traditional to have one episode a series which was 'Doctro-lite' and one episode that was 'Companion-lite'. Some are easier to spot than others- Midnight is a companion lite episode, with Donna only appeaing in bookending scenes. Two of the best hidden Doctor lite episodes were Moffat penned- Blink and The Girl Who Waited. In both those you don notice they are Doctor-lite becuase they are cleverly coonstructed to disguise the fact.
This episode is Doctor absent for a long time, yet its not a lite episode, but in service of the story.
The plot concerns the appearence of corpses stained head to foot in red. One of these corpses is that of a journalist who was investigating Mrs Gilliflower- an evangilising Victorian genius promosing safety from the coming apocalpyse in her own purpose built community- Sweetville. Run by her and her 'silent partner' Mr Sweet.
Mrs Gilliflower also has a daughter, Ada, who was horribly blinded, apprently in a drunken rage by her father (now deceased).
The brother of the deceased journalist heads to London to enlist the aid of the 'veiled detective'- and Jenny infiltrate Sweetsville under the guise of wanting to join Mrs Gilliflowers cult.
And its nice this time out that Jenny gets quite a lot to do.
Strax is much as he always his, but I felt his general response of shoot, blow up, send in the laser scalpel monkeys to everything was wearing a little thin.
Whist Jenny investigates we learn that the blinded daughter Ada has someone secretly locked up in a room and she calls the thing in the room 'her monster'.
It doesnt take Jenny long to find her way into Sweetville via a set of lockpicking tools and into a sort of Willy Wonka meeets Hammer House of Horror factory.
And from there to the door of the monster, who she discovers is the Doctor. But he has been stained red with the Crimson Horror and can barely move, letting Matt do his best Boris Karloff impression as he makes his way to a deconamintation chamber before bouncing out back to his usual self.
And thats when the episode really kicks up a gear.
Its a brave opening twenty minutes, leaving the Doctor out, making him a part of the mystery and story. But Gatiss gets away with it precisely becuase it fits the story.
We then get a flickery turn of century recap of how the Doctor and Clara got involved investiating the deaths, getting accpted to live in Sweetville (where there are some surreal images of the preserved memebers of Sweetville in bell jars) captured, and dipped.
But the process doesnt work on the Doctor not being human, and he ends up on the reject pile, only to be found by Ada to be still alive and for her to keep him as her secret and as her pet 'monster'.
Nice as this sequene is I couldnt help but feel that in classic Who that flashback sequence would have been epiosde 1 of 2.
With the Doctor gone Ada discovers her monster is not there and her mother discovers he was there at all and disowns her daughter, there is no place in her glorious post apocalyspe world for the blind or sick or maimed.
"I'm the Doctor, you're nuts, and I'm going to stop you!"
Its worth mentioning here that Diana Rigg and her daughter Rachel, who play the mother daughter of Mrs Gilliflower and Ada are the star turns of this and Rigg has to go down as one of the best guest appearences in a very long time- she has an absolute ball with Mrs Gilliflower who is not just bad but also compltely and utterly bonkers.
And Rachel Striling who plays Ada gives the character the perfect mix of bewilderment, distress and anger. And the scenes between the two are all superb.
Mrs Gilliflower -"Forgive... me?"
Ada- "NEVER."
Mrs Gilliflower -"That's! - my! - girl!"
Back at the factory the Doctor and gang discover Mrs Gilliflower has a glorious steampunk Victroian spacerocket- ready to deliver her Crimson Death to humanity- leaving just her and her 'preserved' few.
Doctor- "In the wrong hands this substance can destroy the world!"
Mrs Gilliflower- "See these Doctor? These are the wrong hands!"
So whilst the gang deal with the crimson horror and prevent it being loaded the Doctor goes off to confront Mrs Gilliflower and in doing so Ada hears from her own mother that it was not her father who blinded her, but her own mother experimenting with doses of the Crimson Horror.
And where does the Crimson Horror come from?- well Mr Sweet of course, who turns out to be a not uncute leech like creture attached to Mrs Gilliflowers chest and which produces venom- the Crimson Horror.
But just when it seems all is to late and Mrs Gilliflower is about t o shoot Ada up pops Strax to shoot Mrs Gilliflower dead and off crawls Mr Sweet, with the Doctor promising to find somewhere for the little creature to live- but he is to late as Ada, in a fit of fury bashes Mr Sweet to a messy goo with her stick.
The episode ends on an epilogue setting up next weeks much anicapted Neil Gaiman Cyberman episode.
The Doctor drops Clara back off at the home she is stayng at, only for her to discover the two teenage kids she is nanny for have found images of her on the web from different time periods and uncovered her secret.
The diretion and visual look of this episode is also worth a mention- since Moffat took over he ha not been afarid to let the direction, lighting and look of Who change to suit each episode, taking it away from the more studio bound look of previous times- and the colour pallette and lighting in this one perfetly conveys a Victorian Yorkshire mood.
This is one of those epiosde Who does occasionally- an out and out romp. Its a lot of fun but largely throwaway. There are a few jokes miss the mark for me too and first time through the wait for the Doctor to show up can seem more than fifteen minutes (perhaps I just miss Matts Doctor more when he is not onscreen than Tennants) but overall I can safely say, whilst not being outstanding, its Gatiss best epiosde since his very first.
Maybe just keep giving him Victorian period pieces to write in the future!
Things of note- The TARDIS is playing up again in terms of not going where the Doctor is trying to get to.
And 5th Doctor refrences this week- mainly to Teagan, gobby australian companion of the 5th Doctor who he was trying to get back to Heathrow airport. Also 'Braveheart, Teagan' was her sort of catchprase, she would to say it to herself to gee herself up, used in this episode a few times as 'braveheart Clara'.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
How I want the Doctor's name to be revealed
The Doctor: "My name is-"
*train passes*
Clara: "What?"
The Doctor: "MY NAME IS -"
*Bus passes and Ten and Nine step out*
Clara: "WHAT?"
The Doctor: "My name is-"
*Ten and Nine hit him on the head with a frying pan and yell "NO" as they drag his body away*

Re: Doctor Who [5]
Another AI of 85.
That makes 5 in a row- the worst run of AI's since series 2 of NuWho.
Yet the last five episodes couldnt have been more different from one another in style and content, that they all got the same rating is very, odd.
Yes its still a good rating, but its also 2 points down on the average for a series. And its not it seems a blip.
It could be the 'blockbuster' an epiosde theme of the series, with no two parters- but then that was true of series 7a, and it averaged 87.
Is it Clara/Pond loss? Hard to judge.
My gut feeling there is perhaps a little of both, people on Who forums dont seem to dislike Clara, not in the same way some hated Amy or some hated Rose, but nor is there a huge amount of enthusiasm for her either as there was for other companions.
Talking of Rose this made me laugh- posted by someone on the Gallifrey Base forum who claimed to have spotted a Rose reference in the Crimson Horror
Where's Mrs Figg when I need her to wind up!
On the Doctors name I wonder how much Moffat will draw in Who mythology?
Time Lords were created/founded by three people- Rassilon, Omega, and the Other.
No one knows who the Other is but the 7the Doctor when he fled Gallifrey took with him the Hand of Omega- a stellar manipulator used by the original 3 to create the first artificial black hole as a power source (the original Eye of Harmony, placed beneath the Panopticon on Gallifrey. The Doctor buried te Hand in a cemetary not far from the Junkyard in Trotters Lane where he had parked the TARDIS in 1963 as the 1st Doctor.
The 8th also, when musing on Omega and Rassilion, spoke of the events as if he were there with them, and the 3rd Doctor once said he was thousands of years old.
The 11th claims to be 1000, but in fact the Doctor has given widely varying numbers as his age over his incarnations and the general consensus is either he no longer knows and picks an age he likes the sound of, or rule one: the Doctor lies.

- Spoiler:
'Big rose-coloured horrible blood sucking leech, living off someone else and spitting venom at others…
It had no loyalty to the one it was attached to, ready to latch onto someone else as soon as it could, and finally the people watching as it slugs its way off from its dying host just want to smash it into pieces.'
