Don't get me started on the infantile physics in angels and demons....

I liked the film Angels and Demons though. It was based in Rome and you got to see some Amazing churches and art and shit.

Re: Books!
Why would you want to see shit? There are plenty of films where you can see that anyway... although most seem to be set in Germany somewhere.

Re: Books!
I'm not enirely clear after a quick Wikipedia search, but is there no "R" in certain Norwegian dialects?
Anyway, I've always pronounced nerd so that it rhymes with herd, curd, turd, etc.

Hmmm, depends how you see it. There's variations, I have a very clear rolling R and other dialekts have... um skarre-R. A more gurgly sound.
Came across this, three girls named Maria (from the band Razika) presenting themselves in slightly different dialects, the third Maria uses skarre R.
Razika (Skarre R)
In English the R is sort of... hardly pronounced at all, so I felt a long R-sound needed a bit of thought.

Re: Books!
Yes, those are the Norwegian R's I was talking about.
The midwestern American R, as opposed to the English R, is made by pushing your tongue as far back in your mouth as possible so that only the sides of the tongue touch the roof of the mouth and saying whatever vowel precedes it. You can hold that sound till you run out of breath.
The tip of the tongue isn't involved at all, which is why many native speakers hate rolled R's. (Right Halfy?)
Not pretty I admit, but for a word like "nerd" it's perfect!

i liked the movie too, it had Ewan McGregor in it
Re: Books!
omg, i'm sitting here reading you guys describing different R's and it sounds so vulgar (I read arse).. heh.. he.. anyways
there are two types of skarre-r, it's like the german but also, i think more common in swedin, a more french r. well.. anyways. I dunno how prominant my rs are in my dialect, i tend to erm... mumble. also, there are people with speak-faults. sort of.

Re: Books!
Googled an obscure Victorian phrase from the Bronte novel I'm reading and wound up on Rap Genius. So that's cool.
I'm having a fun time reading this obscure book "Meanderings of Memory" I picked up in 2003. Just can't find anybody whose read it though.

Every day in this rap shit I just wanna rep my town,
But muthafuckas say I read too much to stand my ground.
Can you be a playa if you got a favorite Bronte sister?
Not if you think even a limerick is a tongue twister.
I'm from B-more, yeah that's the City that Reads,

If you were to ask me who my favourite Bronte sister is, I'd have no answer to that. I just can't decide! I love them all! #playa

Re: Books!
I want to read The Giant Under the Snow by John Gordon. by all accounts its a childrens classic that I had not heard of before, its nice to stumble on something new. This was written in 1968 and is a bit like Alan Garner from what I have read, and since Garner is my fave I must buy a copy.

Re: Books!
Don't know if this has been discussed before - If so, than point me to the right thread.
Has anyone of you read Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time"?
Friend of mine said that I've gotta read it, because it is soooooo good....
I haven't finished the first book (The Eye of the World) yet - read the first half, so maybe I'll change my mind about it - BUT so far it just seems like an imitation of Lord of the Rings... [no offence!]
Does Jordan ever stop copying Tolkien?

Re: Books!
I've heard a lot of good things about Wheel of Time but everyone I've talked to seems to agree that it goes down the shitter sometime around volume 8-10 (some say even earlier). The series seems to have become increasingly overwritten and slow as it went on, which is why Jordan actually died before he could finish it. (The series was completed by Brandon Sanderson with assistance from Jordan's widow.)
Re: Books!
Yeah, I knew the bit about Sanderson. The series really is completed now?? I thought it's going on and on...
So, I wouldn't say, that it's that bad (yet); but for a Lord of the Rings geek it's a bit strenuous trying not to see Lord of the Rings charakters and scenes popping up every few pages.
I'm certainly going to finish the first volume, but I'll think twice about buying the second one.
