Wikipedia, that ultimate font of wisdom, claims 'hello' appeared in writings around 1830 and is related to romance language greetings such as 'Ola!' and 'Olala mon cherie!'

then Edison popularized and pushed the use of 'hello' as the telephone greeting. Other entertaining stuff is proffered but everyone can read it for themselves.

What was interesting to me was I didn't realize Edison took such an interest in the telephone. But I guess he was so involved in improving it that he would shape it. And even non-english speakers use 'hello' when answering the phone, which I now see demonstrates how phone-centric the word is. Glad you brought it up, a new topic in my arsenal of desperate attempts to fascinate alluring ladies at cocktail parties.
