Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Thats how I prefer poems, said as they should be said & in the right context. Not bits pinched here & there by a half baked Kiwi
The correct versions hit home, the words make more sense, its more poignant. Not used by some half baked kiwi to either look clever or mysterious, or, to fill a gap when your to thick to think of something better.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
No surprises there. I think it's clear that like Star Wars the music was a major part of the success, and if anything the leitmotif technique was even more obvious in LotR than Star Wars.
The famous Star Wars throne room scene without music is the best demonstration of this I've ever seen.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Isn't that the Throne Room scene with un-edited audio as well? I mean, Chewbacca's voice is not dubbed yet so he sounds like some dude screaming.
It's still demonstrates what you're talking about of course.
I really like that audio of Tolkien reading Riddles in the Dark! Especially with how he did voices.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
I have an entire album of Tolkien recordings. One of his friends came in with a tape recorder in 1952. Turns out Tolkien had never seen one before and joking suggested an exorcism be performed on the device before they used it. So the first recorded Tolkien is the Lord's Prayer in Gothic English.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Any recitations of the hobbit or LotR you can find on the net is from those recording sessions, so hunting around you can recapture most of it.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
{{{{ I like those except the ent and ent wife song- I definitely prefer the version of it for the BBC radio version. The version here sounds to me like an ent song, whereas according to Treebeard that song was an elvish song about ents, he just liked it (caveats aside of it being too fast and not giving the ent side enough of a say!)
Sadly cant find it on youtube, though heres a bit from the episode as sung by Treebeard, plus the Lore of Living Creatures-
Overall I think the radio version does an excellent job, especially with the poetry of not only retaining a suprsing amount, but giving them good melodies or sometimes just great delivery- heres Sam singing the Fall Of Gil-Galad on the way to Weathertop
And Gimli singing of Durin as they sit it he darkness of Moria-
Sam singing for Frodo in the orc tower-
Upon the Hearth- the hobbit walking song
And to finish a poem that Tolkien wrote as Bilbo's Last Song, but which is not in Lord of the Rings, but which is used in the radio play for Bilbo's last journey }}

They tried. It reportedly wasn't very good and considering the extent to which it's been forgotten I'm inclined to believe that.
