Re: Critical Council
I'm not complaining; I had a great time spamming this place up tonight!
Just don't expect people not to react.

Re: Critical Council
Watching Petty's masterful edits brought two things to mind that I hadn't moaned discussed with others before, so I thought I'd share.
First, until Sam tells Faramir his job there is no mention or allusion to Sam being Frodo's gardener. Even this may be seen as Sam being sarcastic if you didn' know the truth (there is the Sam planting shot, but that could just be him at home). In retrospect this leaves Sams relationship with Frodo (and the Mr Frodo stuff, that mainly creeps in later in the fiims) as very ambiguous if you have not read the books. From the film it looks as if you have this friend who goes on the journey and then becomes quite deferential, no wonder there is soooo much speculation from film fans on the nature of this relationship.
Second is the Prancing Pony. I know there has been a recent discussion of Bree itself being wrong, but to me the Pony is dreadful. It has both hobbits and men as it's clientele, yet the bar is too high for hobbits, with no lower counter (and that is there in the gate so why not at the pony?) and there is not a single other hobbit in the pub! (Yeah I don't know why I only noticed this now - mus have been too bamboozled by PJ's changes

Re: Critical Council
For me the whole Mr Frodo thing that is much more evident later in the films than earlier, is all down to PJ's refual to keep the class system of the Shire, another mistake in my view as I firmly beleive viewers are fascinated and intrested by such things, even if they dont approve of them. And without it you are left with a slightly odd releationship between Frodo and Sam that is rightly open to interpretation as presented.
When Pj tries to simplify Tolkien for his imaginary audience of the brain dead and comatosed he always ends up making it worse.
I have all the same dislikes of the Pony as you Kafria-its unfriendly and its short (ha) of local hobits and wheres the dwarves? There's supposed to be a party of dwarves that came up the Greenway that night- and what about the hobbit rooms? THey look like the rooms in Bakshi's version which is fine except Bakshi's version doesnt follow the books description either- round windows on the hobbit rooms- there are times when I wonder if PJ picked up the book at all or just flicked through Bakshi's version for what happens next.

Re: Critical Council
I think it is only natural that he sees it that way as the cartoon was his introduction, it will have always coloured his idea of the story and was his first stylistic influence too. I find it does too (my prime example is Richard Sharpe - played by Sean Bean - even though I have read all the books and know he is a dark haired lad from the rookeries of London I still visualise Sean and his Yorkshire accent as I read!)

Re: Critical Council
Not sure that doesnt have more to do with your Sean Bean fixatation than anything else Kafria!!
But yeah I see your point, but PJ seems to have been more than influenced, he seems to be delibretly recreating elements from the Bakshi version, of which there are many examples.
Perhaps the reason the second half of TT and most of RotK was so poor was PJ had run out of Bakshi to copy.
