This is probably weird, but 'Three is Company' is one of my favourite chapters in the book, partly the mood and descriptions of Tolkien writing, partly the speech with Gildor, and partly the slowly developing mystery of the black riders, something about this just resonated with me the first time I read the book, it sounds corny but there was a quaint but immerse atmosphere that drew me in. There wasn't really alot that corresponded to this chapter in the film, so it was the first opportunity I really had to picture my own imagery.

About the entire first book actually (book 1 of FotR that is). What you mentioned, and the Old Forest, Bombadil, Bree, Strider, Many Meetings - there's so much to love there Very Happy

It's the first time you leave the comfort of the hobbit holes, and the perils of the Wide World begin to intrude, yet still in the comforting safety of the Shire. I thought it was very cool that Elves would spend time in the Shire (even if in passing), yet most hobbits never even knew they were there.

Not odd at all. He banned all Big People, and set the example by not even allowing himself in. It wasn't a decision; it was following the rule. I thought it was very Kingly.

I really enjoy Book 1 too. The Shire is such a wonderful setting, and Tolkien's low-level worldbuilding is just as good as his large-scale histories. He conveys the feeling of camping and hiking in the woods perfectly. It's pretty remarkable just how effectively he's able to convey the sense of home and value in the Shire too, considering that few readers even in the '50s shared Tolkien's nostalgia for the late Victorian period, and how undeveloped the Shire is in The Hobbit. But he does such a great, vivid job with it that in the space of just two or three chapters, it becomes many people's favorite setting in the whole book.

Indeed, I loved that part of the story. It stands out as the first of the many main departures from Tolkien: that he had Frodo and Sam travel alone from Bag End.

I also loved the seemingly sentient fox's observations concerning the hobbits. Intelligent animals are one of the best traditions in English literature!

(Not to bring the beloved Bakshi Dub into all discussions here, but a passage concerning Gildor was read by Gandalf out of the Book found in Mazarbul.)

I think that the first part appeals so well to us for the very reason that it is not very developed world-building yet. We are still in a recognizable landscape, and the concerns involved are small and manageable. It is not a war that we want our characters to win, we simply want them to get safely to Crickhollow!

I dunno Eldo. People still had a feel for the "simpler" life even in the 50's Smile

WW2 wasnt that long before, people had to "make do", tighten up on food etc, grow yer own & all that Smile

They understood about rebuilding after the bombs blew England to buggery, just like in the Shire at the end of the story when Saruman squirrels himself away. Even more so if you are a country bodkin to begin with ! Theres still one or two of us old farts that love simple pleasures & truly appreciate nature etc. ( thats before you catch us & stick us in old biddies homes ! Smile

& I can run pretty fast !)

I liken LOTR films to looking at a beautiful Elven face with a few pimples on the chin. After a bit you just accept the blemishes as part of the charm, and just try to ignore them. The face is still beautiful.

The Hobbit film is just one big ooozing zit.

Umm...Tolkien didn't write that. He wrote images that went into that, but he never wrote that scene. It should be signed

But it was well done, I'm not sure even Petty has complained about that scene.

I liked Christopher Lee when I first saw him & that was when he played toothy pegs Dracula Very Happy

I like his voice, it sounds soothing & well spoken, you feel you wanna respect him even if you didnt know who he is.

Ayup...

I always get Goosebumps when reading Theodens speech at Minas Tirith. It never fails. Not so much Bernard Hills delivery in the film, but when those Horses start running, I do get a little breathless. Maybe I was a Cavalryman in a past life, LOL. Also, not in LOTR, but from the Silmarillion, Fingons cry. I got goosies just typing...

Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: “Utúlie’n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie’n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!” And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: “Auta i lómë! The night is passing!”"
