Its definitely easier when people have things in common to break the ice with. Its when I cant open a conversation with "so how shit was season 8/Dr Who/Hobbit Movie then?" that is the problem. The worst is having to 'network' while standing around alone in a room while everyone else is deep in networky conversations. I just make an excuse and leave.

What? I open with that line anyway. Sorts the wheat from the chaff real quick! (The wheat being people I can talk to comfortably.) The only problem is that I get a reputation for disliking things.

That's funny, I get a reputation of being a weirdo incapable of furthering her academic career due to a fixation with dragons. Mad

So what's the difference between registering for discord and joining the server?

If you register on Discord then we can do the verification thing, and you'll be recognised the next time you stop by to chat. And be allowed to join members only chats, apparently.

installed it, but of course needs to be tested. To me it's not an obvious thing, plus it keeps telling me I have no friends. Digging into personal issues right from the start. Mad

You have GOT to get a laptop. Desktop computers are only for running big-ass crap. The laptop is far superior for everything else.

Yeah, yeah I know it's more money to spend which is at a premium right now, but if some of that ever comes around I think you'll find yourself being so much happier that you can take it wherever you want to go and have camera, mic, etc all together.

You missed the small group watch of Petty's edits of the Hobbit films. Actually we only watched half as a group: the first half he split into 1 hour chunks, but his second half was 2.5 hours long and we couldn't get schedules to sync.

I watched it separately, don't know about Amarie. We used discord for the first watches.

omg yes! how have i not seen this until now! not that i have ever used discord before, but i had a friend who did d&d and she used it. imma join!

(i actually went into the site-issues segment to ask what the status quo of the forum now is, is it active, who are still active... i miss when we had awards and stuff, but i guess it makes sense since tolkien isn't exatly pushing out new material)

I'm running an RPG on Discord, it's a pretty useful tool.

True about Tolkien, but that's been the case for quite a while. There's still this new show coming up eventually, and that should make for lots of good debate waffling about and crabbit spats.

there should be another attempt....- Norc

{{ well as far as I know Amarie and Finrod have yet to watch part two. If you go to the Petty edits thread youll find links to the two parts on my google drive - (you can download them to watch or just stream it) - if you watch just the first film then we might be able to have a watchalong for the second film, if Amarie and you want to of course.

i miss when we had awards and stuff- Norc

I miss doing them, but the issue is not so much not enough Tolkien as not enough folk on the forum any more. The awards list would just be the same few names over and over for every category. And as theres so few active folk about these days the feedback and interaction with such events, which is all important to making them work and be an event, is just not there sadly Sad Be lucky if even three or four folk bothered voting for awards let alone take part in the event. And it makes the many hours of work it takes to create it all seem not worth the time or effort any more. But I'd love that to change. }}
