Out on my walks with Simi I was cheered up by early Spring Springyness

Re: Tales of Home [8]
I'm jealous - how do you have spring already in January?
Plus - you're about 10 degrees latitude north of NYC. I know the gulf stream is supposed to keep you warm, but this is ridiculous.

New York seems to be on the same latitude as Naples, and Toronto with Florence, and Edinburgh and Moscow. Some of these seem bizarre having extreme cold weather while others on the same latitude are relatively mild.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
The Mediterranean is not as deep as the Atlantic, so you get the moderating influence of large bodies of water without all the deep current overturning. Both annual and decadal cycles are smoothed out from the ocean perspective. So when the Italian climate goes bonkers it's from continental influences.
New York is north of where the gulf stream separates from north America, so if the southern coastal states are fairly warm, England probably will be also even if NYC is comparatively cold. That's only on average though - right now the southern coastal states are being washed with cool continental winds.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
I love reading your posts Halfy you sound so knowledgeable & I get interested quickly. Tho it has been bloody dam cold here. The wind has been raw & cuts like a razor blade. We are lucky in the South that we haven't had snow in years but the North still does. I kinda miss the snow. It makes the thought of Spring so much more exciting.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
Where did your spring pictures come from? Is this cold just temporary?

Re: Tales of Home [8]
Its usually the coldest for us in the South of England after Christmas. Temperature drops right down, coldest at night, frosts, rain, wind, snow maybe. My pics were taken today as I walked the dog. I'm right on the edge of England, South East coast, a town called Eastbourne which, has a reputation of being the South Easts sunniest town

Welp, that's terrifying. Certainly puts your posts about coastal erosion in context.

Good lord, there's people surfing in that picture!
(but then as part of the crew that used to race to Cape Cod when a hurricane was approaching to take advantage of strong winds from the east to hang glide the dunes, I'm hardly one to talk).

Re: Tales of Home [8]
The same storm has been felt down here apparently. I had heard from a friend that there were big waves in the Bay Area, but especially at Mavericks apparently.

Some boats went out yesterday morning to check out the big waves and watch surfers, and one of them overturned in the surf. Got too close I guess!

I miss the snow...
those are slalom-skis for downhills.. with great difficulty one can skate ski. wouldn't recommend it.
also.. one can't tell by the picture but it is about -20-24C on that mountain, but with a moisture in the air of 100%.. so effektive -25C at least.
