- 'it’s probably for the best that new superhero-themed offering The Return of Doctor Mysterio (the first Doctor Who episode in a whole year) is a tale on the lighter side, a story of love, heroics and living brains that tells a fun and breezy story over 60 minutes with some great gags and characterisation.
The Superman/Clark Kent references are acknowledged early on and actually make some sense within the context of the story (in as much as the sci-fi technobabble in Doctor Who ever makes sense), and in many ways the whole story is a love letter to the Christopher Reeve era of the Man of Steel.
Star Justin Chatwin is no Reeve, but his Grant is a winsomely bashful hero well-paired with Charity Wakefield’s intrepid journalist Lucy, creating a two-person love triangle between woman, hero and dork alter-ego that’s charming enough on screen to carry the whole episode.
Though that’s not to say that Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor fades into the background, with the now-experienced Time Lord swinging from windows, solving puzzles and cracking some (genuinely funny) jokes all over the shop, while simultaneously battling a mysterious organisation.
Capaldi could probably do this performance in his sleep by now, the darker Doctor of his first series replaced by a friendlier sort who is kind to children but can still whip out some black humour or talk down a scar-faced villain with a gun. Here’s hoping he can keep up the momentum for next year’s full series.
It’s not a perfect episode – there are a few clunky lines and misjudged moments, and Matt Lucas’ returning guest character Nardole will probably continue to divide viewers – but overall it’s a surprisingly heartfelt, funny and entertaining hour of television (albeit not a very Christmassy one) from a premise that seemed like an odd choice when it was first announced.
All in all, after a long absence you’ll be very glad that Doctor Mysterio made his return this Christmas.'

Doctor Who versus the Bassetts sweety logo doesn't sound like its going to be a subtle satire on the Thatcher government- but it was!

His reply was to harken back to when RTD left and decided not to write again for Who - but then Moffat said he could never say never because he very nearly did get RTD to come back- saying they had story lines and everything planned out but in the end it was other work commitments that made it not happen- otherwise it would have.
That could have been interesting- they do compliment each other well as writers- RTD has the character and emotional drama nailed, and Moffat the plotting and staging nailed.

On the otherhand my family consisted of 7 to early 70's and everyone followed the plot, everyone laughed at the funny bits, the little uns got wide eyed at the cool stuff and 'eewwed' the nasty stuff and were scared by the scary stuff. And I think the only joke that went by anyone was the pokemon Go joke which went right over the head of the oldest there but delighted the youngest.
So plot, definitely a bit thin- but in terms of hitting its target audience on xmas day?

- 'Steven Moffat has written a heart-warming drama, free of schmaltz and sentiment, seasoned with action, romance and mildly icky gore, and with a linear plot that is perfectly digestible for a family audience on Christmas Day. Awash with CGI and under the direction of Ed Bazalgette, it looks gorgeous, cinematically and technically proficient. I hope he returns to the Who fold soon, although he’s not booked in yet for any 2017 episodes.
To cap it all, Capaldi. He’s brilliant. Long may he remain the Doctor.
In short, an unmitigated rave from me this year. The Return of Doctor Mysterio easily garners five stars'- Radio Times
