For some reason I never got around to listening to Blind Guardian's power metal (with distinct prog rock influences) album Nightfall in Middle-Earth (sic), but I'm doing so now and it is fantastic. For those who don't know, it's a concept album that doubles as an adaptation of the better part of The Silmarillion. Not quite making it flesh, but the music itself is great and very fitting IMO for the subject matter IMO. They clearly did their lore homework, too.

Agreed, az. It's less than 20 years old though (1998) which makes me excited to try to listen to more new(er) metal, after having been raised in such a classic rock-heavy environment.
