These last few pages have been a great start to my day. Thanks Norc. Just don't get caught, your teacher will be heart broken. From experience (as a teacher) if you DO get caught just innocently explain the whole thing. He/she will probably be laughing too much to get very mad.

I once had a duo of girls in physics class who were seated together about halfway back, amongst the tables and drawers. They obviously never had their mind on physics. Then one day I was back there to pull out various shapes I had cut of wood so that the center of mass could be found by experiment. Everyone of them had some short poem about getting nothing done in physics class. The next day I recited one of the poems from memory. The day after that they left me a beautiful poem about 20 lines long written in silver ink, all about what I did up in the front of the class while they wrote poetry about not getting anything done. I still have it hanging on my wall.

I think I was entertaining and definitely enjoyed the students. Hmm...the background needed to understand the poem I quoted in class is a little lengthy, but thinking about the poems I just made one up in a similar style:

"Kinematics, kinematics
Physics terms are so erratic
I can't say this too emphatic
I'd rather be home and eating haddock."

That's a nice story and poem, Halfwise.  Nod

And if you managed to activate and get the interest of students that struggled with exactly that in your class, I think you more than deserve the plaudits as a great teacher.

Well, you could look at it this way. You just spent your english class talking to two native english speakers.

I don't think your teacher could complain too much.  Wink

Why is everyone giving me plaudits for being a good teacher when two of my kids were writing poems about not getting anything done?  Shrugging

But then there were a couple other girls in another class that were always laughing and carrying on in the back, and I always wondered what was going on, since they always did well with assignments (unlike the first two). So I snuck up behind them one day, and found they were joking and laughing about physics! Still amazes me...it just never stopped back there.

The boys were funny too, but usually not as charmingly memorable. Though a couple came back after graduation and hid a sixpack of beer outside my back door.

Well, (Speaking only for myself, of course.) I would say firstly that being a good teacher is not only about academic achievement. Secondly. I guess, not having been a teacher, some students will be uninterested whatever you do. And if you can pique their interest in any way, that's a good thing. And thirdly, it was a nice thing you did.

So, all in all, you come out of it looking rather good.  Nod

If they know deep down that you love them, things usually come out okay.

Every now and then a teacher blows up at the class, things add up and you just go ballistic. Dratted kids, &*%$!!, etc.  I had one of those episodes once,  there were a couple moments of silence....then a small voice goes "but you still love us, right?"

That broke me.  I ruefully admitted I did and we went on, back to normal.

I can only assume this happened at your school?

Teaching is stressful. Imagine herding cats, for 5 hours a day, 3/4 of the year, year after year. And each cat has owners who are very protective. Oh there's stories to tell. But some of these 'owners' will applaud if you grab their kid by the scruff of the neck and throw them in a tub of cold water. They've been dreaming of doing the same...but you never know who will applaud and who will come after you with a pitchfork.  Wink

Is 'miip' some sort of Fjordian obscenity?
