        CUISINE Empty CUISINE

Post by leelee Sun Nov 10, 2013 3:39 pm

I don't think I even spelled that right. Who cares. I am cranky, namely because I am very hungry and could not make up my mind so so far I have had nothing Not even my cuppa or Tim Horton's coffee or some Swiss Mocha coffee Nothing.

Any ways from time to time I hear you mention what you are eating and usually I am flabbergasted. I want to know more.
So I thought I would start a thread on what we personally eat, or are eating at the moment and if it is a me thing or a you thing or a national thing
The nan that I loved so much when I was adopted into the family had lovely tea parties, and they dressed up in flowery dresses and hats. And they never ate crusts and neither do I. I save them and sauté them in extra virgin cold pressed olive oil and herbs and make croutons.
I love turkey bacon and green peppers and onions and mushrooms with omega 3 eggs in a flat bread for breakfast. And my yogurt, I always have it. IF I have carbs it has to be oatmeal and fruit and I cannot live with out my cup of , pot of tea.
Sometimes I make Swiss Mocha coffee or Tim Horton's coffee or Irish Cream Coffee , something like that to make the house smell special for breakfast.
If it is hot out I will take a half dozen fruit and cold milk and yogurt and make a shake. But I am middle eastern so the Canadian cereal thing does not really feel good except once in a while.

Scotch pies*, deep fried pizza in a batter, haggis, all served with buckie Nod

* I understand these are quite popular in Canada too.

Lovely idea for a thread, leelee Very Happy I love food and though I stick to healthy food and stay away from the junk in weekdays, I live by the rule that in the weekend I eat whatever I feel like Very Happy Life is too short not to eat chocolate and tacos, so I see no point in avoiding them and die a unhappy man Nod

Just typed a whole thing out and it decided to break... not going to retype it all.

I am a meat eater.... love a nice chunk of animal flesh on my plate. We try and do a proper roast dinner every other week (due to time constraints any other time) and the best I have done so far was a beautiful pork shoulder joint. Gotta have all the trimmings, veg, roast potatoes, gravy and yorkshire puddings. I think that is always the most satisfying dinner.

As far as taste goes, depends on my mood. I love a chinese or a properly cooked pizza at the local italian.

Wowsers, that was awesome Norc. Loved it. All of you cept our Petty made me hungry. I unfortunately on Robbie Burns day, detest haggis,, anyway. You could always tell the children that had to at least taste it at a restaurant. They were the ones whose mothers were giving terrible looks to the men, specially their other half as they hurried their gagging little ones to the bathroom. Or the children were weeping piteously because their slightly tipsy fathers were not listening to their pleas to not have to partake. |I always got a bit down and then used napkins sneakily to dispose of the rest. My brother Nelson most always got a spank in the bathroom as he said what he felt.
I don't eat pork because I am Jewish, but put beef, black angus, in its place and the whole thing , every thing to boot is great. I was a vegetarian for years but found out that I had to have heme iron to live. I was so weak and sick and nothing but a steak once a week or hamburger or beef sausages worked. I was quite sad but I do like it.

Haggis beautiful, prepared and cooked properly, a lot of people cook it wrong and boil the crap out of it until its flavourless.
If you cant taste all the wobbly bits you've overcooked it Nod

I am not interested in food, I eat it because I have to. Dont do breakfast, just coffee until a sarnie at lunch, then dinner. I like it better when somebody else cooks it. which is 100% cos I cant cook.

Figgy!  You live in one of the great cuisine cultures of the world and you don't like food?  That's unconscionable! Mad  We don't get to hear about all the local delights. Sad

I, on the other hand, adore food and cooking.  Leelee, you have really stuck your foot in it, for I'm the type who watches cooking shows (food porn) and uses it.  My mantra is olive oil, garlic and caramelization.

Here's a stunning but simple recipe I stole off the telly.  Thickly slice some truly ripe tomato, marinate in olive oil and fresh thyme (salt and pepper implied).  Plop that on a scorching hot griddle until you develop some deep rich caramelization, then maybe flip it briefly to the other side.

After the tomato is about halfway cooked you can drop on some large shrimp which have been marinating in olive oil, garlic and hot red pepper.  They will curl up into rings as one side browns. Briefly flip.

Put the tomato slice on a plate, top with home-made pesto (I use a mix of basil, mint, cilantro, almonds and of course garlic, olive oil, parmesan) and put a shrimp on top.   Absolute heaven on a plate; exploding with flavor.

My semi-girlfriend is chinese (I can't call her my girlfriend 'cause chinese are sticklers about such things) and she's the type who loves food so much she photographs everything she eats.  She says she doesn't even miss chinese food when she's at my place, which I must admit is a great complement.  When she started popping over at a moment's notice I finally had to break it to her that I don't always eat like that.

Anyway, this weekend I'll make her some vegetarian lasagna with layers of spinach, roasted mushrooms and roasted red bell pepper.  One the side will be fish with a sauce of olive oil, garlic, green onions, dill, lemon, salt and pepper.  It's put in a hot cast iron pan to sear the bottom them put under the broiler.  Served over hash browns.

Okay, I'd better stop.  You may not want to get me started again.

My mom never improved, I think that's why I felt I had to do better.

Her quality was along the lines of what we call a TV dinner: those aluminum foil compartmented trays you'd stick in the oven. Her stuff always tasted just like that, and in fact she started stocking up on them because she couldn't see the point in putting in all the effort when it was pre-packaged for her.
