Star Trek, Star Wars and Who have their own threads so thought would create something to bring people's attention to a few others that might not be well known. Feel free to add your own so that others might find a little bit of T.V. that they didn't know existed.

Scene from my favourite Sci-Fi series of all time. I would recommend it... only lasted 1 year so not much time out of your life. Think it was before it's time as isn't a shiny vision of the future like most that were around at the time. More like the new Battlestar Galactica in it's style.

Another great series was Babylon 5. A bit like Deep Space 9, took a while to get in to it's stride, however actually has a very clever story arc that fits everything that goes on early doors in to the whole big story.

And Stargate. Lots of issues with physics and the like but great stories and characters. As you can tell I love a space battle... it's nice to see them when they don't go according to plan.

That's all for now.

I never got into TV sci-fi that much, though I did see a bit of Stargate. The time loop episode of SG-1 (Window of Opportunity) was funnier than most comedies I've seen. Laughing

I've read a bit of sci-fi over the years too -- I quite enjoyed the original Ringworld and first few Foundation novels -- but I don't read as much as I used too. Although just a couple of days ago I stumbled across a short story called "The Fermi Paradox Is Our Business Model" and I really liked it.

Stargate was consistently entertaining. It was good to have aliens who could actually act: Star Trek seemed to revel in picking the worst actors and giving them the worst lines.

I'm a bit of a Dork about Military Sci Fi, The Forever War being my third fave book, and I love the Eisenhorn and Gaunts Ghosts books by Dan Abnett (granted it's a load of shooting and swearing, based in the universe of the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000 so it's hardly challenging stuff but very entertaining).

I have been meaning to read more varied books, but I have an annoyingly large stack of unread books as it is (Thanks Christopher Tolkien!).

Yeah, I used to watch Stargate a lot. Liked Atlantis too as it was much the same with another bunch of likable characters.

Eldo - the comedy was good too, especially some of the episodes meant to be a comedy episode. Was a very light hearted take on the genre... only took itself seriously a few times (see clip above).

Edit - Malickfan.... have you seen Space: Above and Beyond?

Space and Above? Nope never heard of it.

I actually watch very little TV in general, though I did watch Stargate SG1 and Farscape when they were first out (If I could justify it I would buy the box sets) and enjoyed them alot, Firefly is great as well.

Firefly never got the audience it deserved. I never watched it because I didn't realize what was behind that wimpy title. if I had known it was sci-fi by Josh Whedon I would have been all over it. Once I found out and rented it there was great wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I truly believe if it had a better descriptive title people might have given it a shot; instead one of the best shows ever to hit the screen was cancelled.

Did you mean this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space:_Above_and_Beyond

'According to the producers, the main fictional work that influenced Space: Above and Beyond was the 1974 science fiction novel The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, in addition to other fictional works such as the 1948 World War II biographic novel The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer, the 1895 American Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, and the Iliad, and the 1962 television series "Combat!."[8] At the same time, Space: Above and Beyond also shares conspiracy elements with other television shows co-produced by the same team, such as The X-Files and Millennium.'

Sounds like my thing, yeah I might give it a spin if it's going cheap.

(I'm using a dongle to connect to the internet so can only watch around a hour of video a month so youtube's a no go)

Thanks for the recommendation.

I've always liked Outland, film from 1981.
It shares a lot of similarities with Alien, not in plot but in feel.
Its set on a mining Town on one of the moons of Jupiter, and like Alien it creates a believable setting of a future where mining on a moon is just another blue collar job. And where huge corporations run things instead of governments.

Its basically a remake of the Western, High Noon, but set in space, and one I'd recommend. Great performances from all the cast too-

Believe it or not I've been dabbling in the new "The Tomorrow People', tho' its Americanized version leaves a lot to be desired compared with the WHOvian aspects of the BBC's kids version from many a moon ago.

I've also just seen "Ender's Game", which left me feeling just as cheated as the book did.
On to the new Thor movie tonight, now THAT"S as series of movies that keeps me interested.

I have never been in to any of the Marvel or DC stuff. I can't stand all the bloody reboots they keep doing. By the time I had watched Eric Bana in Hulk and that Spiderman with Kirsten Dunst, they had all 'rebooted' again.

Spiderman is never bloody ending!!!

I cant get into the Marvel stuff either- I thought that Avengers film was one of the poorest things I'd seen in a long time.
The most shocking aspect to me is just how dislikeable all those characters are, and those who are not outright smug or annoying are boring. Mad

Are you talking acting skills or muscles and manliness? If the last two then I think both Tolkien and I would probably have the same opinion.

Just resurrecting an old thread.

I just watched what I think is he best sci-fi episode I have seen. Be interested to see what single episode of anything sci-fi (no films) people would suggest.

I will give them all a watch if I can, although I am sure watching just a stand alone episode wouldnt be the same as knowing the series it is attached to.

You can watch any episode of The Twilight Zone (the 60's and 80's versions) without being really familiar with the series because it's an anthology series.

I'd recommend (from the original series) anything from the first, second, or third season.
