Im a bit surprised by that (though not much as I know there was a big Scandinavian influence there) but I would have thought Orkney or Shetland would be higher.
The Viking connection in York is massive, theres the Jorvic Viking Centre,

They say;

At JORVIK Viking Centre you are standing on the site of one of the most famous and astounding discoveries of modern archaeology. Between the years 1976-81 archaeologists from York Archaeological Trust revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-Age city of Jorvik as it stood nearly 1,000 years ago. These incredible discoveries enabled us to build the JORVIK Viking Centre on the very site where the excavations had taken place, creating a groundbreaking visitor experience that enabled you to experience life in Viking-Age York.

Yes I know the presence there was massive but its in a wider mainland population, whereas on Orkney its a small island population, so I would have expected a higher percent of the people there to be descended from Norwegians, as its a confined population compared to Newcastle that has not changed anything like as much in the intervening years.

Mine had no idea. Maybe we should ask Halfwise, he seems to have the hang of this translation lark.

Yeah, both places where strongholds for it I think.

England (and most of mainland Scotland) were a mixture of Angles, Saxons, Danish Vikings and Ancient Britons. The highest percentage of DNA signatures from the invading groups (Angles, Saxons and Danish Vikings) was found in the North and East of England. Interestingly the place with the highest 'invader input' was York, a well-known Viking settlement site. There was one result in the North and East of England which did not fit this pattern. In Penrith a significant proportion of the men tested had Norwegian DNA signatures on their Y chromosomes. It seems likely that the Norwegian Vikings who travelled along the sea road from Shetland down to the Isle of Man may well have stopped off in Cumbria. It may also have been a safe haven for Vikings expelled from Dublin at the beginning of the 10th century. This finding fits in remarkably well with archaeological finds of Viking burials, Norse-style place-names and stone sculpture. wrote:
And Orkney and the Hebrides:

The outlying Scottish isles provided the most conclusive evidence of a Viking presence. In the Northern and Western Isles, as well as in the far north of the Scottish mainland, Norwegian genetic signatures were found. In Shetland and Orkney 60% of the male population had DNA of Norwegian origin, most probably passed on from the Vikings. Here the Y chromosomes of the rest of the population could be identified as similar to those of the Ancient Britons (Celts) - no evidence of an Anglo-Saxon or Danish influx was found. In the Western Isles traces of Norwegian settlers were also prominent, although not in quite such high numbers as in the Northern Isles. Over 30% of the men tested in the Hebrides showed evidence of Norwegian ancestry in their DNA. The DNA results supported the historical and archaeological record, which shows the Vikings travelling from Norway across to the Northern Isles of Scotland, then around the west coast and into the Irish Sea. wrote:

I don't know where it is, but I wouldn't buy a house there.

We had the first snow of the season today! Very Happy Apparently, anyway. Around 7:30 am I was shelving at the bookstore and people who were coming in announced very excitedly that it was snowing. But I was nowhere near a window, being deep into the shelves, and by the time I got near a window again it had stopped, and no snow had layered. Sad Still, hopefully this is a sign of a snowy winter to come, since it's rare for there to be any snow this early in Maryland, especially in recent years.

Shame about the snow Eldo, we had the same thing here a couple of weeks ago. It snowed for one whole evening. Haven't seen any of it since.

As long as it's snowing on Christmas Eve and there's a fire going in the fireplace I'm happy Smile Though I would like to see the snow coming to stay soon, I'm very much looking forward to go skiing again Tales of Home [3] - Page 26 Ski
