Anything they do is rewriting the original- its quite clear form the original series episode Space Seed where Khan and the Eugenics wars are introduced, and from dialogue in Wrath of Khan, that it was not in any way secret- everyone on earth knew who Khan was.
But given the new franchise bears about as much resemblance to original series star trek as I do to a sober person, I dont suppose it matters now.

It's about time! I'm sure the official fleshed-out explanation for the Eugenics Wars will be far more interesting than what viewers' own imaginations were able to conjure up from the vague descriptions in the original material.
