A friend of Tolkien's once brought in a tape recorder so Tolkien could read some of his writing into it. Tolkien had never seen one before, and jokingly asked if he should invoke some blessings over it to cast out any evil demons. (He did the Lord's Prayer in old english). He then read Riddles in the Dark, and excerpts of the first half of Fellowship of the Ring, including I think ALL the poems.

I have the record, though he later recorded more readings this is the only recording before LoTR was published, and Tolkien in fact did not know if it ever would be published at that point.
