I've seen those before I think they are in The Annotated Hobbit, I find the Russian Artwork rather striking, but like raddy said why is Bilbo bald?

Yeah they are I have it on my shelf. There is a thread here (somewhere!) where I scanned and posted most of the illustrations from it.

Also, I just noticed Bilbo's black (and scaly?) legs. What's that about Question

I think the illustrator is working off the idea that Bilbo is 50 years old. Hasn't done the conversion of hobbit years to human years.

And automatically equated 50 years of age with male pattern baldness.

Try and Equate 23 years with male pattern baldness.

Artwork inspired by Tolkien - Page 23 Giants_by_robertofc-d49s0av

Source: http://robertofc.deviantart.com/art/Stone-Giants-258288007

-I really liked this one, simple but atmospheric, I kinda get where Jackson was coming from with the gaints being literally made out of the mountains (it ties in with the fairytale tone and Bilbo's larger than life way of rephrasing things) it certainly looked rather cool in the film (and made no sense whatsoever) but I'd always just pictured the gaints as just large hairy cavemen.

-Nice to see a Legolas not based on Orlando Bloom.

Artwork inspired by Tolkien - Page 23 Rohan_by_peet

Source: http://peet.deviantart.com/art/Rohan-16580173

-It's quite simple but rather striking i.m.o, you don't see too many pictures of Rohan actually following the book description of a vast expanse of grass plains rather than a series of rocky grasslands.

Artwork inspired by Tolkien - Page 23 Treebeard_fangorn_by_peet-dm4jz

Source: http://peet.deviantart.com/art/Treebeard-Fangorn-1032335

-I really like this take on Treebeard, its more a man who looks sorta like a tree, rather than a tree with eyes and a beard, seems more natural than the take PJ took

-Believe it or not, that is supposed to be Frodo and Sam on the slopes of Mount Doom at '..the end of all things', I certainly found it both...odd...and striking, I think people have a tendecy to paint Hobbits merely as smaller sized men, but I think this picture took an interesting angle, Frodo looks more Rustic and alien in a sense, and you certainly see the pain, stress and age on his face, its an unsual picture in some ways, but certainly one of the most striking illustrations of LOTR i've seen.

Malick Very Happy very nice pics. What niggles me a tad is, if its meant to be September when its Bilbo's ( & Frodo's ) birthday, Im thinking that most pictures Ive seen depict a rich, lush, green height of Summer's day ? Things should sort of.... mellow, go a bit golden ? or....reddish ?....or at least pale down a tiny bit ready for full blown Autumn. Just me being picky ! Very Happy

I would think so, though if not in a LotR thread you couldn't so easily say a blonde and brunette have an obvious identification.
